Description
Tenuta di Biserno Lodovico 2020 in magnum is a commanding and deeply refined Tuscan red, crafted in very limited quantities from the estate’s finest parcels. Named after Lodovico Antinori, the visionary behind the estate, this wine represents the pinnacle of Biserno’s Bordeaux-inspired style on the Tuscan coast. In the generous 1.5L format, it is built for collectors and for long, unhurried meals where the wine can reveal its many layers over time.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lodovico 2020 shows an intense, opaque ruby core with a vibrant, garnet-tinged rim, hinting at both youth and concentration. The nose is polished and complex: ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry are wrapped in notes of cedar, graphite, sweet tobacco and dark chocolate, with subtle shades of dried herbs, violets and warm spices.
On the palate, the wine is powerful yet impeccably tailored. A dark, pure fruit core is supported by fine-grained tannins and a fresh, mineral backbone that reflects its coastal origins. You can expect layers of cassis, plum and black cherry, evolving into espresso, pencil shavings, cigar box and a touch of savory licorice on the long, persistent finish. The 2020 vintage combines ripe fruit with excellent balance, making it approachable with a good decant, but the structure clearly points to significant aging potential. In magnum, it should evolve gracefully for 15–20 years or more, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances.
Production
Tenuta di Biserno lies near the village of Bibbona on the Tuscan coast, just north of Bolgheri, where maritime breezes, abundant sunlight and well-drained, gravelly and alluvial soils are ideal for Bordeaux varieties. Lodovico is sourced from the estate’s top plots, where low-yielding vines produce naturally concentrated fruit. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table to ensure only the best berries make it into the final blend. The cuvée is typically dominated by Cabernet Franc, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a touch of Petit Verdot, all vinified separately in temperature‑controlled conditions to preserve aromatics and finesse. The wine then matures in high-quality French oak barriques (a significant portion new) to integrate tannins, build texture and add subtle spice before blending and extended bottle aging, particularly important for this magnum release.
Food & Serving
Lodovico 2020 is a natural match for richly flavored, refined dishes: think Bistecca alla Fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb, venison with juniper, or truffle-infused dishes such as tagliatelle with black truffle or mushroom risotto. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic depth and balance. Given its youth and stature, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended, especially from magnum, to allow the tannins to relax and the wine’s layered bouquet to fully unfold.
Producer
Tenuta di Biserno is a relatively young but already highly regarded estate founded by Lodovico Antinori, the renowned figure behind the iconic Ornellaia. Located in the coastal hills of Bibbona in Tuscany, the estate was conceived from the outset as a specialist in Bordeaux grape varieties, leveraging soils and climate that mirror some of the great left-bank terroirs of Bordeaux. Lodovico is the flagship wine of the property and only made in the most successful vintages, representing the ultimate expression of Cabernet Franc-driven blends from this unique corner of Tuscany. In a short time, Tenuta di Biserno has earned a place among the region’s top producers, with high critical acclaim and a reputation for wines that combine Mediterranean richness with precision, elegance and notable aging capacity.
