Tenuta dell’Ornellaia’s 2022 Bolgheri Ornellaia is one of Tuscany’s most celebrated Bordeaux-inspired reds, combining the richness of the Mediterranean coast with remarkable structure and finesse. Produced at the historic estate established in 1981, it is a powerful, polished wine shaped by carefully selected French grape varieties and meticulous parcel-by-parcel vinification.

Tasting Notes
Deep and richly coloured in the glass, the 2022 Ornellaia opens with an expressive bouquet of dark fruit, including ripe blackberry and blackcurrant, complemented by subtle notes of vanilla, tobacco and finely integrated oak. On the palate, it is expansive and generous, with concentrated fruit, impressive depth and a firm, powerful tannin structure. The finish is full-bodied, persistent and layered, suggesting excellent development potential in bottle. Although approachable with decanting, this is a wine that will benefit from further cellaring. It should develop additional complexity over the next 10–20 years, provided it is stored in suitable conditions.

Production
The estate lies in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast in Maremma, where a Mediterranean climate, sea breezes and varied soils create ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented separately according to parcel in stainless-steel tanks, allowing each vineyard component to retain its individual character. The wine then matures for approximately 18 months in French oak barriques, partly new, followed by further ageing in bottle before release.

Food & Serving
Ornellaia 2022 is an excellent match for grilled or roasted beef, game and slow-cooked lamb, as well as rich meat sauces and dishes featuring truffles. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving to soften the tannins and allow the wine’s dark-fruit, spice and tobacco notes to unfold.

Producer
Tenuta dell’Ornellaia was revitalised in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, who recognised the neglected estate’s exceptional potential and, with the assistance of renowned agronomist André Tchelistcheff, planted some of the first French grape varieties in Bolgheri. The estate quickly established itself as a benchmark for premium coastal Tuscan wines. Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi and Robert Mondavi became owners in 2002, and the estate is now entirely owned by Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi. Today, Ornellaia is internationally recognised for its outstanding expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
