Description
Taylor’s Vintage Port 2017 is a powerful, highly rated expression from one of the Douro’s most historic port houses, offered here in a convenient 37.5cl bottle. With only a small number of Vintage releases made by Taylor’s since 1900, this is a wine selected for exceptional years and built to age for decades.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby core with a vivid purple edge, hinting at its youth and concentration. The nose is richly layered with violets, dark forest berries, and subtle accents of eucalyptus and liquorice.
The palate is full-bodied, concentrated, and impressively structured, combining vivid fruit with serious depth and power. Despite its intensity, it remains refined rather than heavy, and the firm backbone suggests outstanding aging potential of 50 to 75 years. It is approachable in its youth with patience, but will reward long cellaring.
Production
Taylor’s 2017 Vintage Port comes from the Douro Valley, where the fruit is sourced from the estate’s own top-class vineyards, including Quinta de Vargellas, Quinta de Terra Feita, and Quinta do Junco. These vineyards are classified in Group A, the highest category in the region, and their differing microclimates add complexity and structure to the final wine. The wine is traditionally made as a field blend and matured for around 20 months in wood before bottling.
Food & Serving
Best served slightly chilled in large red wine glasses to bring out its aromatic depth and texture. It can be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative after-dinner wine, or paired with rich dishes such as a juicy red pepper steak, dark chocolate desserts, or blue cheese. Decanting is recommended, especially if enjoyed young, to allow the wine to open fully.
Producer
Taylor’s, officially Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman, has been producing port since 1692 and remains one of the most respected names in the category. The house has long been a pioneer in the port trade, from acquiring its own Douro vineyards in the 18th century to helping define styles such as Single-Quinta Vintage and Late Bottled Vintage. Known for exceptional Vintage Ports and a consistent reputation for quality, Taylor’s is regarded as one of the benchmark producers in the Douro and beyond.
