Description
Taylor’s Vintage Port 2017 is a benchmark release from one of the Douro’s most iconic houses, combining immense power with remarkable precision. With critics awarding it near-perfect scores and Taylor’s itself comparing the vintage to legendary years, this is a serious collector’s Port built for long-term cellaring.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby core with a hint of purple at the rim, signaling both youth and concentration. The nose is richly layered, opening with violets, dark forest berries, eucalyptus, and a touch of licorice, all framed by the intense, polished style Taylor’s is known for.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and tightly structured, with vivid black fruit, impressive depth, and a long, powerful finish. Despite its generosity of fruit, it remains focused and built to evolve beautifully over decades, with an aging potential of 50 to 75 years or more.
Production
Taylor’s sources its Vintage Port from its own prized Douro estates, including Quinta de Vargellas, Quinta de Terra Feita, and Quinta do Junco, all classified in the top Group A category. The varied microclimates and schist-rich terroirs of these vineyards give the wine its complexity, structure, and concentration. The 2017 Vintage Port was made from a traditional field blend and aged for around 20 months in wood before bottling, preserving both freshness and depth.
Food & Serving
This is a Port that can be enjoyed on its own after dinner, but it also pairs beautifully with richly flavored dishes such as a juicy red pepper steak or other robust grilled red meats. Serve slightly chilled in large red wine glasses to best appreciate its aromatic complexity, and decant if drinking young to allow the wine to open gradually.
Producer
Taylor’s, officially Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman, has been producing Port since 1692 and is regarded as one of the great names in the region. The house has played a pioneering role in the history of Port, from acquiring its own vineyards in the Douro in 1744 to helping shape modern styles such as Single-Quinta Vintage and inventing LBV in 1970. Today, Taylor’s remains one of the most respected producers in Portugal, consistently earning top-tier acclaim from critics worldwide.
