Description

Taylor’s Vintage Port 1970 is a classic example of why this legendary house is so highly regarded among collectors of fortified wine. Built for longevity and depth, it shows the dense, age-worthy style that has made Taylor’s one of the benchmark names in Vintage Port since the late 17th century.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this vintage port typically shows a deep garnet to brick-toned core with mature edges, reflecting decades of evolution in bottle. The bouquet is layered and expressive, with notes of dried black fruits, fig, plum compote, cocoa, cedar, spice, and subtle earthy complexity. On the palate, it is rich and firmly structured, with concentrated fruit, polished sweetness, and Taylor’s signature backbone of tannin and acidity still providing lift and precision. The finish is long, savory, and persistent, with the kind of inner strength that allows great Taylor’s vintages to remain compelling for many years. While beautifully approachable now, it is also a Port with serious aging pedigree and can continue to develop gracefully in the right cellar conditions.

Production
Taylor’s sources its fruit from some of the Douro Valley’s finest vineyard sites, including its own historic estates, where the schist soils and dramatic hillside terrain help produce low-yielding, intensely flavored grapes. The different microclimates across these vineyards contribute to the complexity and structure for which the house is famous. Traditional harvesting and careful selection of fruit are essential to preserving quality in a vintage of this caliber. Vinification follows classic Port-making methods, with fermentation halted by the addition of grape spirit to retain natural sweetness and concentration. The 1970 vintage was made to express power, depth, and long-term cellar potential rather than immediate softness, which is why it has such lasting presence today.

Food & Serving
Serve Taylor’s Vintage Port 1970 slightly below room temperature, ideally around 16–18°C. It is an excellent match for blue cheese, aged cheddar, stilton, dark chocolate desserts, walnut tart, or simply enjoyed on its own after dinner. If the bottle has been resting for many years, decant gently to separate any sediment and allow the wine to open before serving.

Producer
Taylor’s, officially Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman, has been producing Port since 1692 and remains one of the most respected houses in the Douro. Known especially for its Vintage Port, the estate has long been associated with structure, longevity, and outstanding quality. Taylor’s was a pioneer in the Port trade, among the first to invest in its own vineyards in the Douro and later a key innovator in styles such as Single-Quinta Vintage and Late Bottled Vintage. Its wines are widely praised by critics and collectors alike, and the house continues to stand as one of the great references in premium Port.
