Taylor's Quinta de Vargellas Vinha Velha 2017

Taylor’s Quinta de Vargellas Vinha Velha 2017 is a highly distinctive Single Quinta Vintage Port from one of the Douro’s most legendary estates. Drawn from old vines at Quinta de Vargellas, it combines the classic Taylor’s house style—elegance, structure, and concentrated fruit—with the depth and complexity that have made Vargellas a benchmark site for generations.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, inky ruby-purple colour that hints at its youthful power. The nose is layered and expressive, with dark plum, blackberry, and black cherry at the forefront, followed by notes of violet, spice, cocoa, and a subtle, mineral freshness. The palate is rich and serious, with dense black fruit, firm tannins, and a long, composed finish. Compared with the regular Taylor’s Vintage Port, this bottling feels darker and more restrained, yet also more concentrated and potentially more rewarding with time. It has excellent aging potential and should develop beautifully over several decades.

Production
The grapes come from Quinta de Vargellas in the Douro Valley, one of the most celebrated single vineyards in Port production. The old-vine parcels benefit from a demanding schist terroir and a hot, dry climate that naturally limits yields and encourages intensity, structure, and aromatic complexity. The wine is made from a field blend led by Touriga Nacional and other traditional Douro varieties, then matured for around 20 months in French oak before bottling.

Food & Serving
Best served slightly cool, around 16-18°C, and ideally decanted several hours before drinking, especially when young. It pairs beautifully with blue cheese, dark chocolate desserts, or rich nut-and-caramel tarts, and also works well alongside roasted nuts or a simple moment of contemplation on its own.
