Taylor's Quinta de Vargellas Vinha Velha 2000

Taylor’s Quinta de Vargellas Vinha Velha 2000 is a distinguished single-quinta Vintage Port from one of the Douro’s most legendary vineyards. Built on old-vine fruit from Quinta de Vargellas, it combines the house’s signature elegance and dryness with the depth, structure, and intensity that have made Taylor’s one of the great names in Port. This vintage also reflects Taylor’s long heritage of innovation and excellence in the Douro, dating back to 1692.

Tasting Notes
Deep, concentrated ruby in the glass, this Port shows an expressive nose of ripe black fruit, dark chocolate, and fine spice, with floral and earthy nuances adding complexity. On the palate it is full-bodied and richly textured, yet poised and polished, with lush fruit, a firm structural backbone, and a long, precise finish. Robert Parker noted its “lush, sexy and irresistible” character, with remarkable balance and a touch of maturity, while still having plenty of life ahead. It is beautifully enjoyable now, but also has the concentration and structure to age for many years.

Production
The grapes come from Quinta de Vargellas, one of Taylor’s most iconic estates in the Douro Valley, where steep terraced vineyards and a hot, dry climate produce wines with power and definition. The vineyard’s old vines contribute complexity and natural concentration, and the fruit is traditionally harvested by hand to preserve quality. Vinification is carried out in the classic Port style, with the wine aged in used French oak vats, allowing the fruit and structure to remain front and center while the wine develops finesse and harmony.

Food & Serving
Best enjoyed with blue cheese, dark chocolate desserts, or rich nut-based pastries, this Port also pairs beautifully with roasted nuts or simply on its own after dinner. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for a couple of hours if drinking young, as it benefits from air and will open up beautifully in the glass.
