Description
Taupenot-Merme’s Saint-Romain 2023 is an expressive red Burgundy from one of the Côte de Beaune’s most elevated and distinctive appellations. It combines vibrant red-fruit character with firm structure, smoky nuances and the finesse associated with the Morey-Saint-Denis-based domaine. The Taupenot-Merme family has been involved in Burgundy’s wine production since the 18th century, with the domaine officially established in 1963.
Tasting Notes
The wine opens with aromas of ripe cherries and redcurrants, followed by more complex notes of smoke and stewed fruit as it develops in the glass. On the palate, it is powerful and energetic, with pronounced tannins and refreshing acidity giving the wine both intensity and definition.
With bottle age, the firm framework should soften and develop greater elegance, while the fruit becomes more integrated and layered. It can be enjoyed in its youth for its lively character, but should reward several years of cellaring as the structure harmonises.
Production
Saint-Romain is known for its cool, elevated vineyards and limestone- and marl-rich soils, which help preserve freshness while lending the wines a distinctive mineral tension. The fruit is handled with a terroir-focused approach, with careful harvesting and minimal intervention in the cellar to allow the character of the site to remain at the forefront. The resulting wine balances concentrated fruit with the acidity and structure typical of its hillside origin.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly cool, around 14–16°C, to highlight the wine’s freshness and red-fruit profile. It pairs well with roast chicken, duck, veal, pork tenderloin, mushroom dishes and earthy preparations such as lentils or wild mushrooms. Decanting is not essential when young, but a brief decant of 30–60 minutes can help open the smoky fruit and soften the youthful tannins.
Producer
Domaine Taupenot-Merme is rooted in Morey-Saint-Denis, at the heart of Burgundy’s prestigious Côte de Nuits. Although the domaine was formally founded in 1963 through the marriage of Jean Taupenot and Denise Merme, the family’s winemaking heritage reaches back to the 18th century. Today, seventh-generation siblings Virginie and Romain oversee approximately 19 hectares of vineyards planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The domaine is respected for wines of finesse and complexity, shaped by careful attention to terroir and a restrained, low-intervention cellar philosophy.
