Description
Taupenot-Merme’s Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 2023 is a refined Burgundy Pinot Noir from one of the Côte de Nuits’ most respected family domaines. It combines the appellation’s characteristic structure and depth with the domaine’s signature finesse, offering layered fruit, spice and savoury complexity. The Taupenot-Merme estate has been rooted in Burgundy since the 18th century and has been based in Morey-Saint-Denis since its official founding in 1963.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays an intense, deep ruby-red colour. Its expressive nose opens with ripe cherry and blackcurrant, followed by notes of truffle, warm spices and subtle earthy nuances.
On the palate, spicy flavours are complemented by liquorice and dark berry fruit. Elegant, well-integrated tannins provide structure without overshadowing the wine’s finesse, while a persistent, savoury finish adds further complexity. This is a youthful 2023 with the concentration to develop beautifully over the next 6–10 years, and potentially longer when well stored.
Production
Made primarily from Pinot Noir grown in the Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Pruliers climat, the wine reflects the limestone and marl soils characteristic of the Côte de Nuits. The grapes are harvested by hand and undergo a cool pre-fermentation maceration lasting 8–10 days at 10°C, followed by 7–9 days of fermentation and maceration in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Daily manual pigeage and carefully controlled remontage encourage gentle, thorough extraction. After pressing at low pneumatic pressure, the wine is matured in oak barrels, with no more than 30% new oak, allowing the fruit and terroir to remain at the forefront.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Its combination of dark fruit, spice and elegant tannins makes it an excellent partner for roast duck, coq au vin, beef tenderloin, veal, game birds and mushroom-based dishes. It can be enjoyed without decanting, but a 30–60 minute decant will help reveal its truffle and spice character, particularly in its youth.
Producer
Domaine Taupenot-Merme originates in the prestigious Burgundy village of Morey-Saint-Denis. Although the domaine was officially established in 1963 following the marriage of Jean Taupenot and Denise Merme, the family’s winemaking history reaches back to the 18th century. Today, seventh-generation siblings Virginie and Romain Taupenot-Merme oversee approximately 19 hectares planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their wines are valued for their precision, finesse and complexity, achieved through terroir-focused vineyard work and a restrained, minimal-intervention approach in the cellar.
