Description

Taupenot-Merme’s Mazoyères-Chambertin 2023 is a distinguished Grand Cru Burgundy from the Côte de Nuits, produced from Pinot Noir in one of the region’s most revered vineyards. It combines the depth and structure expected of a Chambertin Grand Cru with the domaine’s characteristic finesse, making it a compelling wine for both immediate enjoyment and long-term cellaring. The Taupenot-Merme family has been involved in Burgundy’s winegrowing tradition since the 18th century, with the domaine formally established in 1963.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep ruby-red colour, with the concentration and clarity typical of a fine Côte de Nuits Grand Cru. Its aromatic profile is intense and layered, revealing ripe red and black fruits alongside savoury, animal nuances reminiscent of musk. With age, notes of liquorice and further earthy complexity are likely to emerge. On the palate, it is full-bodied, rounded and richly textured, yet balanced by integrated acidity and impressive complexity. Refined tannins provide structure without overwhelming the fruit, leading to an elegant, persistent finish. Although approachable with careful aeration, the wine has excellent ageing potential and should develop greater aromatic depth and harmony over many years in bottle.

Production
The grapes are harvested by hand and undergo a cool pre-fermentation maceration lasting 8–10 days at approximately 10°C. Fermentation and maceration continue for a further 7–9 days, with daily manual pigeage and carefully controlled remontage to extract colour, flavour and structure. The wine is then gently pressed using a pneumatic press at low pressure, helping to achieve refined tannins. It matures for 15–18 months in oak barrels, around 40–50% of which are new, allowing the wine’s Grand Cru character and Morey-Saint-Denis terroir to remain at the forefront.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to come gently to temperature. A young bottle will benefit from decanting for around one to two hours, while mature vintages may be better served directly from the bottle to preserve their delicate aromas. Its depth and polished tannins make it an excellent partner for roasted or braised beef, venison, lamb, duck, game birds and richly flavoured mushroom dishes. It is also a natural match for classic Burgundian cuisine.

Producer
Domaine Taupenot-Merme is based in the prestigious village of Morey-Saint-Denis in Burgundy. Although the domaine was officially founded in 1963 following the marriage of Jean Taupenot and Denise Merme, the family’s involvement in viticulture reaches back to the 18th century. Today, seventh-generation winemakers Virginie and Romain Taupenot-Merme oversee approximately 19 hectares planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay across a range of Burgundy appellations. Their wines are recognised for their finesse and complexity, shaped by careful vineyard work, hand harvesting and a restrained, terroir-focused approach in the cellar.
