Description

Taupenot-Merme’s Gevrey-Chambertin Bel Air 2024 captures the classic strength and elegance of this celebrated Côte de Nuits appellation. Concentrated fruit, well-integrated tannins and lively acidity give the wine both immediate appeal and the structure to develop with bottle age. Produced by a family whose winemaking heritage reaches back to the 18th century, it reflects the domaine’s meticulous, terroir-focused approach.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep ruby colour, hinting at the concentration on the palate. Its expressive nose opens with intense aromas of blackcurrant and a selection of ripe red and black berries, complemented by the subtle complexity that comes from maturation in oak. On the palate, it is relatively powerful yet retains the softness and finesse associated with Taupenot-Merme. Firm but polished tannins provide structure, while vibrant acidity keeps the wine fresh and balanced through the finish. This is a serious Gevrey-Chambertin with the potential to gain further complexity over several years in bottle; it can be enjoyed young with decanting or cellared for approximately 6–10 years, depending on storage conditions.

Production
The grapes are hand-harvested and undergo an 8–10-day cold pre-fermentation maceration at 10°C in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Fermentation maceration then continues for 7–9 days, with daily manual pigeage and carefully controlled remontage. After pressing at low pneumatic pressure to extract refined tannins, the wine matures for 15–18 months in oak barrels, around 30% of which are new. This restrained élevage allows the character of the Gevrey-Chambertin terroir and the fruit to remain at the centre.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the wine to come gently to temperature. A decant of 30–60 minutes is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and open the aromas. Its combination of power, acidity and structure makes it an excellent match for roast duck, beef fillet, venison, lamb, coq au vin and richly flavoured mushroom dishes.

Producer
Domaine Taupenot-Merme is based in Morey-Saint-Denis, at the heart of Burgundy’s prestigious Côte de Nuits. The domaine was officially established in 1963 following the marriage of Jean Taupenot and Denise Merme, although both families’ involvement in winegrowing dates back to the 18th century. Today, seventh-generation siblings Virginie and Romain oversee approximately 19 hectares of vineyards planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their wines are recognised for their finesse and complexity, achieved through careful vineyard work and a minimalist approach in the cellar.
