Description
Taupenot-Merme’s Gevrey-Chambertin Bel Air 2023 is a powerful yet refined Burgundy red, combining the appellation’s characteristic structure with remarkable freshness and softness. Made from Pinot Noir and sourced from the prestigious Côte de Nuits, it reflects the domaine’s long family tradition and terroir-focused approach to winemaking.
Tasting Notes
The wine opens with an intense bouquet of blackcurrants and a mix of small red and dark berries. On the palate, it is full-bodied and energetic, with firm but well-integrated tannins balanced by a persistent softness and excellent acidity. Its combination of concentration, freshness and finesse gives it strong cellaring potential; it should develop greater aromatic complexity over the next several years and continue to evolve well with further bottle age.
Production
The grapes are harvested by hand and undergo an 8- to 10-day cold pre-fermentation maceration at 10°C in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Fermentation maceration follows for 7 to 9 days, with daily manual pigeage and controlled remontage, while the total maceration lasts 18 to 23 days. The wine is then gently pressed pneumatically at low pressure before maturing for 15 to 18 months in oak barrels, 30% of which are new. This careful, low-intervention approach is designed to preserve the character of the fruit and the expression of the site.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the wine to breathe. A short decant of 30–60 minutes can help open its aromas in its youth, although older bottles are best handled gently. Its structure and acidity make it a natural partner for roast duck, beef tenderloin, venison, lamb, mushroom-based dishes and richly flavoured poultry preparations.
Producer
Domaine Taupenot-Merme is based in Morey-Saint-Denis, at the heart of Burgundy’s celebrated Côte de Nuits. Although the domaine was officially established in 1963 following the marriage of Jean Taupenot and Denise Merme, the families’ involvement in viticulture reaches back to the 18th century. Today, seventh-generation siblings Virginie and Romain oversee approximately 19 hectares planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their wines are recognised for their finesse and complexity, achieved through meticulous vineyard work and minimal intervention in the cellar.
