Description

Taupenot-Merme’s Gevrey-Chambertin 2024 is a generous and characterful red Burgundy, combining the appellation’s naturally powerful style with the domaine’s signature finesse. Crafted from Pinot Noir and shaped by careful, terroir-focused winemaking, it offers impressive depth, freshness and balance from one of Burgundy’s most celebrated villages.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep ruby colour, leading into an expressive bouquet of blackcurrants and other small red and dark fruits. On the palate, it is notably powerful and structured, with firm yet polished tannins, persistent freshness and an underlying softness that keeps the wine harmonious and inviting. Its combination of concentration, acidity and tannic structure gives it excellent cellaring potential. While approachable with decanting, it should gain further complexity and savoury nuance over the coming years, developing gracefully in bottle.

Production
The grapes are harvested by hand from the domaine’s Burgundy vineyards, where careful vineyard work allows the character of the terroir to shine through. After an 8–10-day cold pre-fermentation maceration at 10°C, the wine undergoes a further 7–9 days of fermentative maceration in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, with daily manual pigeage and controlled remontage. The wine is then gently pressed pneumatically at low pressure before maturing for 15–18 months in oak barrels, 30% of which are new.

Food & Serving
Its depth, freshness and structured tannins make this Gevrey-Chambertin a natural partner for roast duck, coq au vin, beef fillet, lamb and richly flavoured mushroom dishes. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 15–17°C. Decant for approximately 30–60 minutes when serving young to open the aromas and soften the tannins; mature bottles are best handled more gently and may only require careful pouring.

Producer
Domaine Taupenot-Merme is based in the heart of Burgundy and traces its winemaking heritage back to the 18th century. The domaine was officially established in 1963 following the marriage of Jean Taupenot and Denise Merme, and is now run by the seventh generation, Virginie and Romain. Its holdings extend across 19 hectares of vineyards planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with wines known for their finesse and complexity. Manual harvesting, terroir-conscious vineyard work and minimal intervention in the cellar are central to the domaine’s approach.
