Description
Taupenot-Merme Corton Rognet 2024 is a distinguished Burgundy red from one of the Côte de Beaune’s celebrated Grand Cru vineyards. Crafted from Pinot Noir, it combines the depth and structure expected from Corton with the finesse and precision that define this respected Morey-Saint-Denis domaine. With its power, fresh acidity and elegant tannins, the wine is built to develop beautifully with age.
Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep, vibrant ruby colour. Its nose opens with fresh red-fruit aromas, including blackcurrant and cherry, complemented by subtle floral and earthy nuances. With bottle age, the bouquet is expected to gain further complexity, evolving towards notes of truffle, leather and other savoury tertiary tones.
On the palate, it is powerful and concentrated, yet finely balanced by bright acidity and firm, elegant tannins. The finish is long and structured, offering both freshness and depth. While approachable with careful aeration, the 2024 vintage should reward cellaring for many years as its fruit, tannins and aromatic complexity harmonise.
Production
Corton Rognet lies on the renowned Corton hill in Burgundy, where Pinot Noir benefits from a distinctive combination of exposure, altitude and mineral-rich soils. At Taupenot-Merme, the grapes are harvested by hand before undergoing a cold pre-fermentation maceration lasting five to eight days at 10°C. Fermentation and maceration continue for a further seven to nine days, with daily manual pigeage and carefully controlled remontage. The wine is then gently pressed using a pneumatic press at low pressure to extract refined tannins. It matures in oak barrels for 15 to 18 months, with approximately 40–50% new oak.
Food & Serving
Its structure and savoury depth make this Corton Rognet a natural partner for refined dishes such as roast duck, venison, beef fillet, game birds and richly flavoured mushroom preparations. It can also accompany mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C, allowing the bottle to come gradually to temperature. Young bottles benefit from decanting for around one to two hours, while older vintages are best handled gently and decanted only if necessary to remove sediment.
Producer
Domaine Taupenot-Merme is based in Morey-Saint-Denis at the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits. Although the domaine was officially established in 1963 following the marriage of Jean Taupenot and Denise Merme, the family’s involvement in winegrowing reaches back to the 18th century. Today, seventh-generation siblings Virginie and Romain Taupenot lead the estate, which covers approximately 19 hectares planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay across a range of prestigious appellations. Their wines are known for their finesse, complexity and strong expression of place, achieved through careful vineyard work and a restrained, minimally interventionist approach in the cellar.
