Description

Taupenot-Merme’s Corton Rognet 2023 is a powerful yet refined Burgundy Grand Cru, combining the depth of the Corton hill with the domaine’s signature finesse. Crafted from Pinot Noir and shaped by careful, low-intervention winemaking, it offers both immediate appeal and considerable potential for development in bottle. Corton is one of Burgundy’s most historic and prestigious Grand Cru sites, renowned for producing red wines of structure, complexity and longevity.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep ruby-red colour, with an inviting nose of fresh red fruit, including blackcurrant and cherry. With time and bottle age, the aromatic profile is expected to evolve towards more savoury notes of truffle, leather and woodland nuances. Powerful and concentrated on the palate, it is framed by firm yet elegant tannins and a beautifully poised acidity. The combination of fruit, structure and freshness gives the wine impressive balance and suggests excellent ageing potential. It can be enjoyed in its youth with decanting, but should develop greater complexity over the coming years.

Production
The grapes are harvested by hand from the Corton Rognet Grand Cru vineyard in Burgundy. Following a cold pre-fermentation maceration lasting 5–8 days at 10°C, fermentation and maceration continue for 7–9 days, with daily manual pigeage and carefully controlled remontage. The wine is then gently pressed in a pneumatic press at low pressure to extract refined tannins. Maturation takes place in oak barrels for 15–18 months, with approximately 40–50% new oak.

Food & Serving
Its structure and savoury depth make this Corton Rognet an excellent match for roast or braised beef, venison, duck, lamb and richly flavoured mushroom dishes. It also pairs beautifully with Burgundy classics such as coq au vin and beef bourguignon. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours when serving young to open the wine’s aromas and soften its tannins; older bottles should be handled gently and decanted only if necessary to remove sediment.

Producer
Domaine Taupenot-Merme is based in Morey-Saint-Denis, in the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits. Although the domaine was officially established in 1963 following the marriage of Jean Taupenot and Denise Merme, the family’s involvement in winegrowing dates back to the 18th century. Today, seventh-generation siblings Virginie and Romain Taupenot-Merme oversee approximately 19 hectares planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The domaine is recognised for wines that express their terroir with finesse and complexity, supported by meticulous vineyard work and a restrained approach in the cellar.
