Description

Taupenot-Merme’s Charmes-Chambertin 2023 is a refined Burgundy Pinot Noir from one of the Côte de Nuits’ most prestigious Grand Cru vineyards. Renowned for combining power with elegance, Charmes-Chambertin has long been prized for its expressive fruit, supple structure and remarkable ability to develop complexity with age.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep ruby-red colour, with an aromatic profile led by intense red and black fruits. Subtle savoury and animal nuances, reminiscent of musk, add depth, while hints of liquorice are likely to emerge more distinctly as the wine matures. On the palate, it is elegant, polished and finely detailed, with a harmonious balance between ripe fruit, refined tannins and fresh acidity. Its graceful structure gives it excellent ageing potential. While already approachable with careful aeration, the 2023 vintage should gain further complexity over the next decade and continue to develop in bottle for considerably longer under ideal cellar conditions.

Production
The wine comes from the celebrated Charmes-Chambertin terroir in Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits, where Pinot Noir benefits from the region’s limestone-rich soils and cool continental climate. The grapes are harvested by hand, followed by a cold pre-fermentation maceration lasting 8–10 days at 10°C. Fermentation and maceration continue for a further 7–9 days, with daily manual pigeage and carefully controlled remontage. The wine is then gently pressed using a pneumatic press at low pressure before maturing in oak barrels for 15–18 months, with approximately 40–50% new oak.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for refined dishes such as roast duck, venison, pheasant, beef tenderloin and lamb. Its balance and savoury depth also suit mushroom-based dishes, truffle accents and mature soft cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C. Decanting is recommended for around 1–2 hours when drinking the wine young, while older bottles are best decanted carefully and briefly, if at all, to preserve their delicate developed aromas.

Producer
Domaine Taupenot-Merme is based in Morey-Saint-Denis, at the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits. Although the domaine was officially established in 1963 following the marriage of Jean Taupenot and Denise Merme, the family’s winemaking heritage reaches back to the 18th century. Today, the seventh generation, Virginie and Romain, manages approximately 19 hectares of vineyards planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their wines are recognised for their finesse and complexity, shaped by terroir-focused viticulture, hand harvesting and a minimalist approach in the cellar.
