Description
Tabalí’s Pedregoso Gran Reserva Viognier 2023 is a rich yet refreshing Chilean white wine that showcases the elegance of Viognier in the cool Limarí Valley. Sourced predominantly from old vines at Tabalí’s vineyard, just 24 kilometres from the Pacific coast, it combines generous stone-fruit character with vibrant natural acidity—a style that reflects Chile’s move beyond its traditional grape varieties and warmer growing regions.
Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to show a bright, pale golden appearance. Its expressive nose offers ripe pear, peach and apricot, complemented by floral notes, nectarine and hints of tropical fruit. On the palate, it is full-bodied, succulent and dry in impression, with a rounded texture and a refreshing, slightly elevated acidity shaped by the cool coastal conditions. Around 9 grams of residual sugar help create balance without making the wine taste sweet. Enjoy it in its youth to appreciate its fruit-forward character; it may also develop additional texture and complexity over the short term.
Production
Approximately 90% of the grapes come from old Viognier vines at Tabalí’s vineyard in the Limarí Valley, located close to the coast. The cool climate encourages slow ripening and helps preserve the variety’s aromatic intensity and natural acidity. The wine is made with a focus on freshness and fruit purity, using stainless-steel fermentation and maturation rather than oak. The grapes are harvested at a point that allows the wine to combine ripe, generous fruit with the lively acidity typical of the area.
Food & Serving
Serve this versatile Viognier lightly chilled, at around 10–12°C. Its generous fruit, freshness and subtle residual sweetness make it an excellent match for fish terrine with white asparagus, creamy prawn risotto, roast or grilled chicken, and delicate veal dishes. Decanting is not necessary, although opening the bottle shortly before serving can allow its floral and tropical aromas to unfold.
Producer
Tabalí is a Chilean producer based in the Limarí Valley, a cool coastal region that has become increasingly respected for expressive, mineral-fresh wines. The estate has helped demonstrate that Rhône varieties such as Viognier and Syrah can perform exceptionally well in Chile when planted in the right conditions. By working with vineyards close to the Pacific and exploring less conventional varieties and cooler sites, Tabalí represents the country’s progressive approach to modern winemaking.
