Description

Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Clos du Roy 2022 is a refined Burgundy red that showcases the untapped potential of Marsannay, the northern gateway to the Côte de Nuits. Crafted from Pinot Noir grown in one of the village’s most historic and revered lieux-dits, this cuvée delivers both precision and depth. It stands out for its combination of purity, energy and structure, offering a serious, ageworthy expression at a still relatively under-the-radar address in Burgundy.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Clos du Roy presents a luminous, medium ruby colour with a youthful edge. The nose is elegant yet detailed, opening with red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry, layered with rose petals, violet, blood orange zest, subtle spice and a faint hint of graphite and earth. On the palate, this is a finely etched, tensile Pinot Noir with a silky but taut texture. Crunchy red fruits, cranberry and pomegranate lead, followed by darker undertones of Morello cherry and a delicate savoury note of forest floor and dried herbs. The oak is very discreet, framing the fruit rather than dominating it, and the acidity is vibrant, giving lift and length. Tannins are ultra-fine but present, suggesting the wine will evolve beautifully over the next 8–12 years, gaining complexity and a more pronounced mineral dimension with time in bottle.

Production
Clos du Roy is one of Marsannay’s most esteemed climats, sitting on well-drained, limestone-rich soils with varying bands of clay and marl that give both finesse and structure to Pinot Noir. Sylvain Pataille, a leading figure in the appellation, farms his vines organically and with a strong biodynamic influence, favouring low yields and meticulous work in the vineyard to ensure perfectly ripe, healthy fruit. Grapes are harvested by hand, sorted carefully and often fermented with a significant proportion of whole clusters to enhance aromatic lift and fine-grained tannins. Native yeasts conduct the fermentation, and extraction is gentle, focusing on infusion rather than power. The wine is then aged in Burgundy barrels (with a modest use of new oak) on fine lees, before bottling with minimal intervention to preserve terroir expression.

Food & Serving
This Marsannay Clos du Roy pairs beautifully with roasted poultry (especially duck or guinea fowl), veal, pork loin, charcuterie, and mushroom-based dishes such as risotto or a wild mushroom tart. It also shines alongside game birds and lighter lamb preparations, as well as semi-soft cheeses like Reblochon or Tomme. Serve at 14–16°C to highlight its aromatic detail and freshness. A short decant of 30–45 minutes in its youth can help the wine open up, while older bottles (5+ years) may only need a gentle splash into a carafe just before serving.

Producer
Sylvain Pataille is widely regarded as one of the key figures in the qualitative renaissance of Marsannay. Based in the northern Côte de Nuits, he began his domaine in the late 1990s and has steadily expanded, farming largely old vines and working organically with a low-intervention philosophy. Pataille is known for his meticulous vineyard work, his deep understanding of Marsannay’s diverse terroirs, and his commitment to expressing each climat with clarity rather than power. Today, his wines are benchmark references for the appellation, helping elevate Marsannay’s reputation to stand alongside more illustrious Côte de Nuits villages, and they are highly sought-after by Burgundy enthusiasts around the world.
