Stellenrust, After Eight Shiraz 2022

Stellenrust After Eight Shiraz 2022 is a small-batch, handcrafted wine from the ArtiSons collection, created by brothers Tertius and Kobe of Stellenrust Estate. Sourced from a secluded 0.2-hectare parcel of 22-year-old vines in Bottelary, the wine is distinguished by its striking combination of pepper, violet, blueberry and mint, with the surrounding eucalyptus trees adding to its distinctive character.

Tasting Notes
Deep and richly coloured in the glass, the wine opens with expressive aromas of ripe blueberries, dark fruit, pepper and floral violet, complemented by a fresh, minty note. The palate is concentrated yet balanced, combining generous fruit with savoury spice, refined tannins and well-integrated French oak. Fermentation with 8% whole bunches contributes additional structure and freshness, while 18 months of maturation give the wine depth and polish. It is approachable now, but its fruit, tannin and oak structure should allow it to develop further over the next several years.

Production
The Shiraz comes from a small, isolated vineyard plot in Bottelary, Stellenbosch, planted 22 years ago beside a stand of eucalyptus trees. The grapes are transported to the cellar by a gravity-fed drip system before being gently pressed, with 8% fresh stems added back to enhance the balance between colour and tannin. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel, followed by 18 months of maturation in French oak, split evenly between new and older barrels.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C, allowing the wine to show both its fruit and aromatic freshness. It is well suited to grilled or slow-roasted red meats, peppered steak, lamb, venison and richly seasoned dishes, while its subtle mint character also complements herb-crusted preparations. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth.
