Description
Steininger Weissburgunder Trockenbeerenauslese 2017 is a luxurious Austrian dessert wine that captures the pure, late-harvest intensity of Pinot Blanc (Weissburgunder) from the cool Kamptal region. Crafted from meticulously selected, nobly botrytised berries, it offers remarkable sweetness balanced by vibrant acidity. This style of Trockenbeerenauslese is among Austria’s most prized dessert wines, made only in exceptional vintages when nature allows such concentration and finesse.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Trockenbeerenauslese shows a deep golden hue with amber highlights, signalling both its richness and a touch of bottle age. The nose is highly expressive and layered, with aromas of dried apricot, candied citrus peel, honeycomb and quince, interwoven with notes of acacia blossom, caramelised pear and a subtle hint of botrytis spice.
On the palate, the wine is unctuous yet finely poised, with luscious flavours of apricot jam, baked apple, orange marmalade and honey, lifted by Kamptal’s hallmark freshness. Delicate notes of nougat, creamy vanilla and a whisper of toasted nuts emerge on the long, silky finish. The natural acidity keeps the sweetness in perfect balance, preventing any heaviness and inviting another sip. While already beautifully open and complex, this 2017 has excellent aging potential: over the next 10–20 years it will gain even more depth, developing tones of dried fruit, toffee, and caramelised nuts.
Production
The grapes for this Weissburgunder Trockenbeerenauslese come from the higher-lying vineyards around Langenlois in Kamptal, where cool nights and mineral-rich soils help retain acidity while allowing long hang-time. Only the most intensely ripened, nobly botrytised berries are selected by hand, often in multiple passes through the vineyard, ensuring concentration and purity of flavour. In the cellar, the juice is gently pressed from these shrivelled berries and slowly fermented at controlled temperatures to preserve delicate aromatics, before maturing in tank (and in some cases neutral large oak) to harmonise texture and sweetness. The result is a small-production dessert wine of remarkable density, finesse and balance.
Food & Serving
This Trockenbeerenauslese is a natural match for rich desserts such as crème brûlée, vanilla panna cotta, apricot tart, baked apple with nuts and honey, or a classic apple strudel. It also pairs beautifully with blue cheeses like Roquefort or Gorgonzola and with aged hard cheeses, where its sweetness and acidity offset salt and intensity. For a simpler pairing, serve it alongside foie gras or a plate of dried apricots and roasted almonds. Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C, in small white wine or dessert wine glasses. Decanting is generally not necessary, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving allows the aromatics to fully unfold.
Producer
Weingut Steininger is a respected family estate based in the picturesque wine town of Langenlois in Kamptal, one of Austria’s leading white wine regions. Led by Karl and Brigitte Steininger and now with daughter Eva increasingly active on the commercial side, the estate has become known both for its precise, characterful still wines—especially Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and Weissburgunder—and for its outstanding traditional-method Sekts, produced from many of the varieties they grow. Their vineyards climb the hills behind Langenlois into the higher, cooler sites that deliver aromatic intensity and freshness. Beyond their wines, the Steininger family co-created the acclaimed Loisium wine experience and hotel, complete with atmospheric underground cellars that tell the story of wine production in the region. This combination of hospitality, innovation and consistent quality has made Weingut Steininger one of Kamptal’s most recognisable and admired producers.
