Stag's Leap, Napa Valley S.L.V. 2022

Stag’s Leap S.L.V. 2022 is an estate-grown Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from one of the most historically significant vineyards in American wine. The S.L.V. Estate Cabernet Sauvignon gained international recognition when its 1973 vintage famously triumphed over leading Bordeaux wines at the 1976 Judgment of Paris, helping place Napa Valley firmly on the world wine map.

Tasting Notes
Deep and opaque in appearance, the 2022 vintage offers an expressive nose of ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry, supported by notes of cedar, graphite, dark chocolate and finely integrated French oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated, with rich dark-fruit flavours, polished tannins and a fresh mineral lift that brings balance and length. The wine’s complete malolactic fermentation contributes to its smooth, velvety texture, while its structure and concentration suggest excellent ageing potential. It can be enjoyed in its youth after decanting, but should develop added complexity over the next decade or more under suitable cellar conditions.

Production
The grapes are carefully hand-harvested and rigorously selected to ensure that only the finest fruit is used. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks, preserving the wine’s purity, freshness and vivid fruit character, followed by full malolactic conversion for added softness and texture. The wine is then matured for approximately 20–21 months in 100% new French oak, adding layers of spice, cedar and subtle toast to its powerful Cabernet Sauvignon profile.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours when serving young to help open the wine and soften its structured tannins. Its depth and concentration make it an excellent match for grilled or roasted beef, lamb, venison, filet mignon, hearty mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses.

Estate Cabernet Sauvignon won the red-wine category at the 1976 Judgment of Paris, outperforming several renowned Bordeaux estates in a blind tasting.
