Description

A rare expression of Rheingau Riesling, this 1971 Steinberger Beerenauslese comes from the historic Kloster Eberbach estate and offers an exceptional glimpse into the region’s winemaking heritage. Produced from selectively harvested, botrytis-affected grapes, it combines concentrated sweetness with the freshness and mineral character for which fine Rheingau Riesling is renowned. Presented in a 0.7-litre bottle and elegant wooden case, it is a distinguished choice for collectors and special occasions.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, with the development and richness expected from more than five decades of bottle age. Its aromatic profile is intensely perfumed, revealing ripe peach, apricot and luscious honey, complemented by subtle mature-wine nuances. On the palate, it is full-bodied and richly sweet, yet beautifully balanced by vibrant acidity. Concentrated stone-fruit flavours lead into a long, elegant finish marked by a delicate mineral note. This is a fully mature wine and is best enjoyed now; its condition will naturally depend on provenance, storage and the individual bottle.

Production
Steinberg is one of the celebrated vineyard sites associated with Kloster Eberbach in the Rheingau, where Riesling benefits from a favourable climate, steep vineyard conditions and mineral-influenced soils. Beerenauslese is made from individually selected, fully ripe grapes, typically affected by noble rot, which concentrates their sugars, aromas and flavour. The 1971 wine was produced in the traditional style of the Staatsweingüter Eltville, allowing the grape’s natural sweetness, acidity and site character to define the finished wine.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 8–10°C. Its rich fruit and balancing acidity make it an excellent partner for fruit-based desserts, apricot or peach tart, crème brûlée, blue cheese and foie gras; it is also superb served on its own as an aperitif or contemplative finale. Decanting is not usually necessary, although carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and gently decanting may be advisable if mature sediment is present.

Producer
Staatsweingüter Eltville, historically associated with Kloster Eberbach, represents one of the Rheingau’s most important winemaking traditions. Founded as a Cistercian monastery in the 12th century, Kloster Eberbach played a formative role in the development and reputation of German wine, particularly Riesling. The Steinberg vineyard remains one of the estate’s landmark sites, and this 1971 Beerenauslese reflects the longevity, precision and prestige that have made the estate significant both in the Rheingau and beyond.
