Description
A rare Rheingau treasure, this 1976 Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese from Staatsweingüter Eltville (Kloster Eberbach) showcases the remarkable concentration and finesse that only the finest botrytized grapes can deliver. Produced in a tiny 0.7-liter format and released as a Versteigerung bottling, it stands as a compelling piece of German wine history as well as an exceptional dessert wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep golden hue, reflecting decades of development and the natural richness of the Trockenbeerenauslese style. The bouquet is layered and inviting, with aromas of honey, apricot, ripe peach, and citrus peel, framed by a subtle complexity that speaks to long aging.
On the palate, the wine is intensely sweet yet beautifully balanced by bright acidity, giving it clarity and lift rather than weight alone. The finish is long, elegant, and persistent, with lingering notes of candied fruit and honeyed minerality. With proper cellaring, it has the structure to remain enjoyable for years, though it is already a fully mature and rewarding wine now.
Production
This wine comes from the famed Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg vineyard in the Rheingau, an area known for steep slopes, slate-rich soils, and excellent exposure that help Riesling reach exceptional levels of ripeness. The grapes for Trockenbeerenauslese are harvested only when fully shriveled and concentrated by noble rot, requiring painstaking hand selection of individual berries. Vinification is carried out gently to preserve the aromatic purity and natural sweetness of the fruit, resulting in a wine of remarkable concentration and precision.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, to preserve its freshness and aromatic detail. It is superb with fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, blue cheeses, foie gras, or simply enjoyed on its own as a contemplative aperitif. Decanting is generally not necessary, but a brief opening before serving can help the wine express its full aromatic range.
