Description

A remarkable historic Rheingau Riesling from the exceptional 1937 vintage, produced by the Staatsweingüter Eltville at Kloster Eberbach. Sourced from the renowned Rüdesheimer Berg Rottland vineyard, this Trockenbeerenauslese Cabinet reflects the concentrated sweetness and remarkable longevity associated with botrytised Riesling from Germany’s great wine estates.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep golden colour, likely intensified by its many decades of bottle age. Its mature bouquet is complex and expressive, with notes of honey, dried apricot, ripe peach and citrus, complemented by the layered character typical of a well-preserved historic sweet wine. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, balancing pronounced sweetness with a delicate thread of acidity. The finish is long, harmonious and persistent. At this age, the wine’s condition will depend greatly on its storage history, bottle fill level and cork integrity; it is best enjoyed soon after opening rather than cellared further.

Production
Made from Riesling grown in the steep Rüdesheimer Berg Rottland vineyard in the Rheingau, a site known for its favourable exposure and conditions for producing concentrated, late-harvest wines. The Trockenbeerenauslese designation indicates individually selected, highly concentrated grapes, traditionally affected by noble rot. Specific harvest and vinification details for this historic 1937 bottling are not available, but the wine would have been crafted in the traditional style of the Staatsweingüter Eltville and matured for extended bottle ageing.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing a little time in the glass for its mature aromas to unfold. It pairs beautifully with foie gras, pâté, blue cheese, fruit-based desserts and refined pastries, while its sweetness and acidity can also complement spicy Asian cuisine. Decanting is not always necessary for an old Riesling; instead, open it carefully and pour gently, or use a fine wine funnel if sediment is present. Given its age, taste it immediately after opening and enjoy it over the course of the same evening.

Producer
Kloster Eberbach was founded by Cistercian monks in 1136 and has played a central role in the history of Rheingau wine for centuries. The estate became particularly influential through its work with Riesling and other traditional German varieties, while the Staatsweingüter Eltville represented the historic state wine estate associated with this celebrated property. The Rüdesheimer Berg vineyards remain among the Rheingau’s most distinguished sites, making this 1937 bottling a fascinating piece of German wine history as well as a rare mature dessert wine.
