Description

A rare 1971 Riesling Beerenauslese from Erbacher Marcobrunn, one of the Rheingau’s most celebrated vineyard sites, produced by the historic Staatsweingüter Eltville (Kloster Eberbach). Offered as a Versteigerungswein, this mature dessert wine represents the tradition of Germany’s prestigious auction wines and offers an exceptional opportunity to experience a beautifully aged Rheingau Riesling.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its considerable age and concentration. Its intense bouquet is layered with honey, ripe peach, apricot and citrus, complemented by the complex, developed notes that emerge in a mature Beerenauslese. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, balancing its sweetness with refreshing acidity. Concentrated fruit flavours lead into a long, persistent finish, with the wine’s age adding depth and elegance. Properly stored, this 1971 vintage is best appreciated as a mature collector’s wine, and should be enjoyed soon after opening to appreciate its developed character.

Production
Beerenauslese is made from individually selected, overripe grapes, often affected by noble rot, which naturally concentrates the sugars, aromas and flavour in the berries. The Erbacher Marcobrunn vineyard is renowned for producing expressive, long-lived Riesling, while the 1971 Versteigerung designation identifies this bottle as part of Germany’s historic auction-wine tradition. Specific details regarding the harvest and vinification of this individual bottle are not available.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s aromas to unfold without muting its complexity. It is a natural match for foie gras, pâté, blue cheese and fruit-based desserts, while its acidity also complements spicy Asian cuisine. Decanting is not usually necessary for an old Beerenauslese, but carefully standing the bottle upright before serving and pouring gently can help separate any sediment. Open shortly before tasting and enjoy in small glasses.

Producer
Kloster Eberbach is one of Germany’s most historic wine estates, founded as a Cistercian monastery in the Rheingau in the 12th century. Today associated with the Staatsweingüter of Hesse, the estate has played a defining role in the region’s viticultural heritage and is particularly known for distinguished Riesling from sites such as Erbacher Marcobrunn. Its historic auction wines remain highly sought after for their rarity, provenance and ageing potential.
