A rare piece of German wine history, the 1962 Niersteiner Glöck Riesling Eiswein “Bestes Fass” comes from the Staatl. Weinbaudomänen Mainz and was produced in a highly limited 0.7-litre bottling. Harvested only once the grapes had frozen on the vine, this exceptional Riesling combines remarkable concentration with the refined sweetness and acidity that define great Eiswein.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its considerable age and concentration. Its mature bouquet suggests ripe stone fruit, candied citrus, honey and delicate spice, with the developed complexity expected from a well-preserved sweet wine of this vintage. On the palate, rich natural sweetness is balanced by Riesling’s refreshing acidity, creating a poised and elegant impression rather than heaviness. A long, lingering finish brings together mature fruit, honeyed notes and gentle spice. As a 1962 bottling, it is already a fully mature collector’s wine and is best enjoyed now, subject to provenance and storage conditions.

Production
The wine was made from hand-selected Riesling grapes from the Niersteiner Glöck vineyard in Rheinhessen. For Eiswein, the grapes are left on the vine until temperatures fall below freezing, allowing frozen water to be separated from the concentrated grape must during pressing. The resulting wine is naturally sweet, intensely flavoured and marked by a balance of richness and acidity. This “Bestes Fass” bottling represents a specially selected cask from the 1962 vintage.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C to allow its mature aromas and layered sweetness to develop. It is an elegant partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pastries and blue or mature hard cheeses, and can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative wine for a special occasion. Decanting is generally unnecessary for such an old Riesling; instead, open carefully and pour gently, allowing any sediment to remain in the bottle.
