Description

A rare and mature German Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese from the distinguished Bodenheimer St. Alban vineyard, produced by Staatl. Weinbaudomänen Mainz in the celebrated 1971 vintage. With its exceptional concentration, balancing acidity and almost five decades of bottle age, this 0.7-litre bottle is a compelling choice for collectors and special occasions.

Tasting Notes
Golden amber in appearance, reflecting its long maturation in bottle. The nose is richly layered, revealing honey, dried fruit and subtle spice, with the complex, evolved character expected from a mature Trockenbeerenauslese. On the palate, intense sweetness is carried by refreshing acidity, creating an elegant balance and remarkable vitality. Concentrated yet poised, the wine offers a lingering finish and is best appreciated now, provided it has been stored in suitable conditions. As with any mature wine, its exact condition may vary depending on provenance and storage.

Production
The wine comes from the Bodenheimer St. Alban site in Rheinhessen, known for its mineral-rich soils and favourable microclimate. The grapes were harvested by hand and carefully selected, with only the ripest and finest berries chosen for this prestigious Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese. The style is defined by exceptional concentration and natural sweetness, balanced by Riesling’s characteristic acidity.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. Its richness makes it a natural partner for foie gras, blue cheese, fruit-based desserts and refined pastries, while its mature complexity also allows it to be enjoyed on its own. Decanting is not usually necessary, but careful opening and gentle pouring can help preserve the wine’s delicate, evolved aromas. A clean, tulip-shaped dessert-wine glass is recommended.
