Description
Spottswoode Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 is the more approachable, yet still beautifully pedigreed, sibling to Spottswoode’s iconic Estate Cabernet. Crafted in a challenging Napa vintage, it shows poise, freshness and classical balance rather than sheer power. This is a Cabernet that brings together serious provenance, organic farming and a graceful, food‑friendly style, all at a more accessible price point than the flagship wine. Blended from 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 9% Merlot and 5% Malbec, Lyndenhurst showcases the elegance and structure that have made Spottswoode one of Napa’s most respected names since the late 1970s. It draws on fruit from the historic St. Helena estate and select Napa Valley vineyards, reflecting both the pioneering heritage of this family‑run winery and the modern refinement of its winemaking.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon displays a deep ruby to garnet core with a bright, youthful rim. It is not an ultra-dense, opaque wine, but rather one that signals finesse and clarity.
The nose opens with ripe dark berries—blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry—layered with cocoa, baking chocolate, a touch of espresso and gentle baking spice from French oak. Subtle notes of dried violet, cedar and graphite add complexity without overwhelming the fruit. On the palate, this vintage leans toward balance and drinkability, with supple tannins and a medium to medium‑plus body rather than massive concentration. Flavors of dark plum, cassis, chocolate and sweet tobacco are supported by fresh acidity, giving the wine lift and a clean, dry finish. As Antonio Galloni notes, there’s less mid‑palate density and length than in more opulent years, but the proportions are harmonious and make the wine particularly enjoyable in its youth.
Given the nature of the 2020 vintage, Lyndenhurst 2020 is best appreciated over the next 6–10 years rather than cellared for decades. With a few years in bottle it will continue to knit together, softening its tannins and allowing the chocolate, spice and savory notes to emerge more clearly, but it is already very approachable with a short decant.
Production
Lyndenhurst is sourced primarily from Spottswoode’s organically farmed estate vineyard in St. Helena, along with carefully selected Napa Valley sites chosen for their complementary terroirs. The alluvial, gravelly and loamy soils and the warm yet breezy St. Helena climate give Cabernet both ripeness and classic structure, while cooler pockets of Napa add freshness and aromatic lift. Grapes are harvested by hand, with meticulous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery—especially crucial in a challenging year like 2020—so that only pristine fruit makes it into the final blend. Fermentation typically takes place in stainless steel or small tanks with attentive temperature control, followed by aging in French oak barrels (a portion new, the rest once- and twice‑used) to frame the wine with subtle spice, vanilla and toast without overshadowing the varietal character. The final blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec is assembled to capture balance, elegance and the recognizable Spottswoode signature.
Food & Serving
Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with grilled or roasted meats such as ribeye steak, lamb chops, beef tenderloin and herb‑crusted pork. It also works well with richer poultry dishes like roast duck, braised short ribs, mushroom risotto, aged hard cheeses and dishes featuring rosemary, thyme or black pepper. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness; if it’s too warm, the alcohol and oak will seem more prominent. A 30–60 minute decant will help open the wine, soften the tannins and bring the dark fruit and chocolate notes to the fore, making it especially charming with food.
Producer
Spottswoode Estate is one of Napa Valley’s benchmark Cabernet producers, a family‑owned winery in St. Helena with roots dating back to the 19th century. The modern era began in 1972 when the Novak family purchased the historic property, and over the ensuing decades Spottswoode has become synonymous with refined, classically styled Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate is a pioneer in organic farming in the region, having farmed organically since the late 1980s and achieving organic certification in the 1990s—well ahead of the curve. Today Spottswoode is widely respected for its commitment to sustainability, its elegant, ageworthy Estate Cabernet, and its more approachable yet still pedigreed Lyndenhurst bottling, both of which regularly earn critical acclaim and underscore the estate’s importance in the St. Helena and broader Napa Valley landscape.
