Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon displays a deep ruby to garnet core with a bright, youthful rim. It is not an ultra-dense, opaque wine, but rather one that signals finesse and clarity. The nose opens with ripe dark berries—blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry—layered with cocoa, baking chocolate, a touch of espresso and gentle baking spice from French oak. Production
Lyndenhurst is sourced primarily from Spottswoode’s organically farmed estate vineyard in St. Helena, along with carefully selected Napa Valley sites chosen for their complementary terroirs. The alluvial, gravelly and loamy soils and the warm yet breezy St. Helena climate give Cabernet both ripeness and classic structure, while cooler pockets of Napa add freshness and aromatic lift. Grapes are harvested by hand, with meticulous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery—especially crucial in a challenging year like 2020—so that only pristine fruit makes it into the final blend. Fermentation typically takes place in stainless steel or small tanks with attentive temperature control, followed by aging in French oak barrels (a portion new, the rest once- and twice‑used) to frame the wine with subtle spice, vanilla and toast without overshadowing the varietal character. The final blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec is assembled to capture balance, elegance and the recognizable Spottswoode signature.
