Description
Spottswoode Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 is a polished, modern expression of Napa Valley Cabernet from one of St. Helena’s most respected estates. Blending fruit from the historic Spottswoode vineyard with select grower sites, it offers the pedigree of top-tier Napa at a more approachable level. Named after the family home, Lyndenhurst carries the estate’s signature elegance, balance, and age-worthy structure in a generous, inviting style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Lyndenhurst shows a deep garnet-purple hue that hints at both concentration and freshness. The nose is beautifully layered, opening with wild blueberries, fresh blackcurrants, and kirsch, followed by subtle notes of dried lavender, baking spice, and a whisper of cigar box and dried herbs.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a focused, supple core of dark berry fruit framed by ripe, grainy tannins. Flavors of cassis, blue plum, and black cherry unfold into nuances of spice cake, cocoa, and a faint earthy savor. There’s plenty of freshness that keeps the wine lively and lifted, leading into a long, slightly earthy finish that feels both complete and refined. Enjoyable now with a decant, it has the structure to develop beautifully over the next 8–12 years.
Production
The Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 is sourced primarily from Spottswoode’s certified organic estate vineyard in St. Helena, along with carefully selected Napa Valley sites that share a similar focus on quality. The warm days and cool nights of Napa’s northern valley floor, combined with gravelly, well-drained soils, give the wines both ripeness and precision. The 2017 blend is composed of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec, and 1% Petit Verdot, all harvested by hand at optimal ripeness. After gentle fermentation in temperature-controlled vessels, the wine is aged in French oak (a significant portion new) to refine the tannins and add subtle spice and complexity, while preserving the purity of fruit that defines Spottswoode’s style.
Food & Serving
This Lyndenhurst Cabernet is a versatile food partner, pairing beautifully with grilled ribeye, roast lamb, braised short ribs, or herb-crusted pork loin. It also works well with richer vegetarian dishes such as mushroom risotto, lentil and walnut loaf, or roasted root vegetables with rosemary and thyme. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) for optimal expression. Decanting for 45–60 minutes before serving will help the aromas open and the tannins soften, especially in the next few years of its evolution.
Producer
Spottswoode Estate, founded in 1882 and family-owned since 1972, is a benchmark Cabernet producer in Napa Valley’s St. Helena appellation. The estate was an early pioneer of organic viticulture in the region, farming organically since the 1980s and earning certification in the early 1990s. Known for crafting Cabernet Sauvignons of finesse, balance, and longevity, Spottswoode has garnered consistent acclaim from critics and collectors alike. Lyndenhurst represents the more immediately accessible side of the estate’s portfolio, yet it still reflects the same meticulous vineyard care, gentle winemaking, and classic Napa Valley character that have made Spottswoode one of the most admired names in the region.
