Description
Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 1988 is a beautifully poised Napa Valley Cabernet that combines power with finesse. This acclaimed estate bottling stands out for its classic structure, layered complexity, and the kind of balance that has made Spottswoode one of California’s most respected names in premium wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, mature garnet hue with subtle signs of age and refinement. The nose is expressive and complex, unfolding with blackcurrant, dark cherry, cedar, tobacco, and gentle spice, all framed by well-integrated oak.
The palate is elegant and harmonious, with ripe black fruit, savory cedar, and earthy nuances carried by fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. French oak aging has given the wine a silky texture and a long, lingering finish. While this vintage is fully enjoyable now, it has also demonstrated the kind of structure that allows top Napa Cabernets of this era to age gracefully for decades.
Production
Produced from Spottswoode’s estate vineyards in Napa Valley, where warm California sunshine is moderated by cooling influences that help preserve freshness and balance. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot reflects a classic Bordeaux-inspired approach, with careful harvesting to capture optimal ripeness and nuance.
Vinification included maturation in French oak barrels, adding depth, polish, and subtle spice while preserving the wine’s natural fruit character and structure.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with grilled ribeye, roast lamb, braised short ribs, wild mushroom dishes, or aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if opening now, to allow the aromas and texture to fully open.
Producer
Spottswoode is a benchmark Napa Valley estate with a long-standing reputation for producing refined, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon. Founded in the late 19th century and later revived as a family-run winery, it has become especially admired for its commitment to organic farming, estate-grown fruit, and consistent excellence. The winery is widely regarded as one of the great names in California Cabernet.
