Description
Sottimano Barbaresco Currá 2015 is a finely crafted Nebbiolo from one of Barbaresco’s most esteemed crus, showcasing the depth and precision that has made Sottimano a reference point in Piemonte. The 2015 vintage combines ripe fruit from a warm, balanced year with the classic structure and elegance that define great Barbaresco. Awarded the coveted 3 Glasses in Gambero Rosso 2021 for this vintage, Currá 2015 stands out as a collector-worthy wine with serious aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Sottimano Barbaresco Currá 2015 presents a luminous garnet core with brick-red reflections at the rim, typical of fine Nebbiolo. The nose opens gradually—this is a wine that rewards patience—with refined aromas of dried violet, dark cherries and plums, and sweet figs, layered with notes of black walnuts, cocoa, and a touch of nougat. With air, more complexity emerges: hints of dried rose petals, fresh sage and thyme, and a distinct, stony minerality that speaks clearly of its cru origin.
On the palate, the 2015 Currá is both structured and sensual. The fruit recalls ripe red and dark berries, young figs, and firm damson plums, wrapped in a dense but finely woven “velvet carpet” of tannin. The tannins are ripe yet authoritative, and the vibrant acidity gives the wine energy and cut, framing the fruit rather than overwhelming it. Mineral undertones and savory herbal notes add depth through the long, persistent finish. Still youthful, the 2015 is already harmonious but will clearly benefit from further cellaring; it can be enjoyed now with generous aeration, but will evolve beautifully over 10–20 years from vintage in a good cellar.
Production
Currá is one of Barbaresco’s top crus, a hillside with calcareous clay and marl soils that lend finesse, tension, and a marked mineral character to Nebbiolo. Sottimano works organically in the vineyards, favoring low yields, careful canopy management, and manual harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it to the cellar. Vinification typically involves spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts and long macerations to gently extract aroma, color, and tannin, followed by aging in French oak barriques (largely used wood) to respect the purity of the fruit and the identity of the vineyard. The result is a Barbaresco that is both powerfully expressive and finely detailed, with a strong sense of place.
Food & Serving
Sottimano Barbaresco Currá 2015 is a superb partner for refined, savoury dishes such as braised veal shank, ossobuco, slow-cooked lamb shoulder, or classic Piemontese plates like brasato al Barolo, tajarin with truffle, and wild mushroom risotto. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, roasted duck, and aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature alpine cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) and allow the wine to breathe; decanting for 1–2 hours is highly recommended in its youth to open the bouquet and soften the tannins. As the wine ages and further integrates, a shorter decant or simply allowing it to unfold slowly in the glass will be sufficient.
Producer
Sottimano is a family-run estate in the heart of Barbaresco, widely respected for its terroir-driven, traditionally minded yet precise expressions of Nebbiolo. Founded in the latter half of the 20th century, the winery has steadily built a reputation as one of the region’s leading producers, with holdings in several of Barbaresco’s finest crus, including Currá, Cottà, Pajoré, and Fausoni. Working organically and with minimal intervention, the Sottimano family focuses on expressing the nuances of each vineyard rather than winemaking artifice. Their wines are regularly highlighted by top Italian and international critics, and the 3 Glasses (Tre Bicchieri) award from Gambero Rosso for the 2015 Currá underlines the estate’s status as a benchmark for elegant, ageworthy Barbaresco.
