Smith & Sheth CRU Pinot Noir Kawarau 2019 is a graceful, finely sculpted New Zealand Pinot Noir that balances weightless elegance with real depth and personality. Sourced from sustainably farmed parcels in Gibbston and crafted by winemaker Steve Smith, it shows just how precise and expressive Central Otago Pinot Noir can be.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright, polished ruby hue. The nose opens with blackberries, plums, dark cherries, and lifted floral and spice notes of anise, cloves, and violets. The palate is silky and layered, with ripe plum, blackberry, and a touch of chocolate framed by lively acidity that keeps everything fresh and focused. It finishes long, elegant, and complex, with enough structure to reward a few years in the cellar, though it is already highly enjoyable now.

Production
The fruit comes from two sustainably farmed vineyards in Gibbston, a cool-climate area known for producing Pinot Noir with finesse, purity, and natural tension. The grapes were hand-harvested, fully destemmed, and fermented in open-top fermenters before spending 10 months in French oak, including 28% new barrels, to add subtle structure and complexity without overpowering the fruit.

Food & Serving
This Pinot Noir is a natural match for duck breast, roast chicken, mushroom risotto, lamb, or game birds, and it also pairs beautifully with grilled salmon or earthy vegetarian dishes. Serve slightly chilled at around 14–16°C, and consider a brief decant of 20–30 minutes if drinking young to help the aromatics open up.
