Description
Sine Qua Non The Thrill of Stamp Collecting 2009 is a standout release from one of California’s most cult-followed producers, offering the kind of originality and concentration that has made Manfred Krankl’s wines legendary. Though the title may be whimsical, the wine itself is seriously composed: powerful, layered, and built with remarkable finesse. This 2009 cuvée also reflects Sine Qua Non’s long-standing reputation for pushing beyond convention while still delivering extraordinary balance and longevity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, alluring color and immediately opens with intense aromas of dark berries, dried rose petal, licorice, black tea, savory herbs, and warm spice. With air, more subtle notes of forest floor, smoke, and earthy complexity emerge, adding dimension to its already expansive bouquet.
The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, yet the texture remains remarkably silky and refined. Ripe tannins, vivid acidity, and a long, persistent finish give the wine both generosity and precision. While it is drinking beautifully now, it still has the structure and depth to continue evolving gracefully over many years.
Production
This blend is built around 75% Grenache, supported by 16% Syrah, 5.5% Mourvèdre, and small amounts of Roussanne and Viognier, creating both richness and aromatic lift. The fruit comes from Sine Qua Non’s own vineyards and carefully selected California sites, including the highly regarded Eleven Confessions vineyard. The warm 2009 vintage contributed ripeness and depth, while the careful vineyard selection and precise vinification preserved freshness, structure, and balance.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with rich, flavorful dishes such as grilled lamb, herb-crusted beef, game, braised short ribs, or roasted duck. It also works well with earthy mushroom dishes and aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow its aromatics and layered texture to fully unfold.
Producer
Sine Qua Non, founded by Manfred Krankl in California, has become one of the most iconic cult producers in the United States. Known for highly limited bottlings, unconventional blends, and artistic labels, the estate has earned an exceptional reputation among collectors and critics alike. Its wines are celebrated for intensity, individuality, and longevity, with Eleven Confessions playing a central role in many of its most acclaimed releases.
