Built primarily on Syrah with small additions of Grenache, Petite Sirah, and possibly other varieties, it combines raw power with remarkable precision and a sense of historical significance in the evolution of modern California fine wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it pours nearly opaque black with vivid violet highlights. The nose is intensely layered, opening with dark berries, black pepper, crushed stone, licorice, smoke, bacon fat, and a delicate floral lift that adds refinement to the wine’s wild edge. The palate is monumental and densely packed, with waves of blueberry, blackberry, savory spice, mineral notes, and meaty complexity. Despite its size, the wine is impressively balanced by firm, ripe tannins and a vibrant line of acidity, giving it both freshness and the structure to age gracefully for many years—likely decades in a strong cellar.

Production
Fruit is drawn primarily from Sine Qua Non’s own estate vineyards, including The Third Twin, Eleven Confessions, and Cumulus, where yields are kept extremely low and vineyard work is carried out with obsessive attention to terroir and ripeness. The blend may vary slightly to achieve the final balance, reflecting Manfred Krankl’s hands-on, intuitive approach to production and his focus on expressing the best of each vintage.

Food & Serving
This is a powerful wine that pairs beautifully with equally bold dishes such as grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, venison, lamb shoulder, or slow-cooked game with earthy mushroom sauces. Serve at around 16–18°C and decant well in advance—at least 2 to 4 hours, and longer if the bottle is young—to allow the aromatics and structure to fully open.
