Description
Sine Qua Non Syrah "Labels" 2007 is one of those rare California wines that feels as much like a collector’s piece as a bottle of fine red wine. Created by Manfred Krankl, it captures the estate’s famously uncompromising style: intensely flavoured, deeply expressive, and shaped with an artist’s eye for detail. The name “Labels” also nods to the many different label designs used for this vintage, a signature touch that has helped make Sine Qua Non a modern cult icon.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it pours an inky, near-black purple, immediately signalling its depth and concentration. The nose is powerful and highly layered, with blackberry, blueberry, black olive, smoked meat, liquorice, graphite, and a dark spice register that keeps unfolding with air.
The palate is dense and commanding, yet remarkably controlled. Massive fruit is framed by firm but polished tannins, vivid acidity, and a long, savoury finish that lingers with notes of smoke, spice, and mineral intensity. This is a wine built for the long haul and should reward extended cellaring beautifully over many years.
Production
This 2007 Syrah comes from a selection of top California vineyard sites, including Eleven Confessions and Bien Nacido, known for their character, precision, and naturally low yields. The fruit was grown with meticulous attention to detail and harvested in very small quantities to preserve concentration and purity. Vinification reflects Krankl’s hands-on approach, resulting in a wine that combines raw power with remarkable balance and detail.
Food & Serving
Best enjoyed with richly flavoured dishes such as slow-braised short ribs, grilled lamb, venison, or roasted game with herbs and dark sauces. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours to allow the wine’s aromatics and structure to open fully.
Producer
Sine Qua Non, founded by Manfred Krankl in California, has become one of the most celebrated cult producers in the United States. Known for tiny production, original labels, and an approach that blends winemaking with visual artistry, the estate has earned an almost legendary status among collectors and critics alike. Its wines are frequently praised for their originality, depth, and uncompromising quality.
