Description
Sine Qua Non is one of California’s most sought-after cult estates, and this 2015 Eleven Confessions release shows exactly why. Presented here as a six-bottle set in original wooden case, it pairs tiny production with extraordinary depth, precision and personality. Built from the estate’s acclaimed Sta. Rita Hills vineyard, it is a showcase of Rhône-style winemaking at its most expressive and collectible.
Tasting Notes
The 2015 Grenache E opens with a deep garnet-purple color and an immediately captivating, earthy-meaty perfume. Expect layers of wood smoke, grilled meat, truffle, iron, kirsch, blackberry pie, Black Forest cake, anise, wild sage and spice, all woven together with remarkable complexity.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and surprisingly muscular, with very fine, densely packed tannins and a textured, almost architectural feel. The finish is exceptionally long, mineral-driven and spice-laced, suggesting outstanding aging potential over many years. The 2015 Syrah M is equally impressive, showing deep garnet-purple color and a more savory profile of peppered salami, black olives, marmite, woodsmoke and preserved plum, supported by firm tannins, fresh acidity and a long, persistent finish built for the long haul.
Production
Both wines come from the Eleven Confessions Estate vineyard in Sta. Rita Hills, one of Sine Qua Non’s flagship sites in Santa Barbara County. The vineyard’s cool coastal influence and distinctive soils help create wines with power, freshness and detail, while the estate’s careful harvesting and barrel-selection approach highlight the best lots from each vintage. The Grenache-dominant blend includes 82% Grenache, 12% Syrah, 5% Petite Syrah and 1% Viognier, with 56% whole-cluster fermentation and around 38 months in French oak, 28% new. The Syrah-dominant blend is 90.6% Syrah, 4.4% Petite Syrah, 2.6% Grenache and 2.4% Viognier, with 43% whole-cluster fermentation and the same long élevage in French oak, 66% new.
Food & Serving
These are serious, layered wines that shine with equally flavorful dishes such as slow-roasted lamb, grilled ribeye, venison, wild mushroom ragout, or braised short ribs. They also pair beautifully with herb-driven Mediterranean cuisine and hard, aged cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C and consider decanting for at least 2–3 hours, especially for the Syrah, to allow the aromatic complexity and structure to fully open.
Producer
Founded by Austrian-born winemaker Manfred Krankl and his wife Elaine, Sine Qua Non began in 1994 with the now-legendary ‘Queen of Spades’ Syrah. Since then, the estate has become one of California’s most famous cult producers, known for tiny allocations, distinctive labels and Rhône-inspired wines of remarkable individuality. SQN’s reputation was cemented early with high critical acclaim, and today the winery remains one of the most admired and hardest-to-find names in American fine wine.
