Description
Simonsig Langbult Steen Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2023 showcases the richness and character of South Africa’s heritage Chenin Blanc vineyards. Made from old-vine “Steen”—the traditional South African name for Chenin Blanc—it combines ripe orchard-fruit depth with refreshing acidity and a distinctive sense of place from Stellenbosch.
Tasting Notes
Bright golden straw in appearance, this Chenin Blanc opens with aromas of ripe pear, yellow apple and stone fruit, complemented by citrus zest, subtle floral tones and a gentle honeyed nuance. On the palate, it is rounded and textured, with flavours of baked apple, peach and lemon curd balanced by lively acidity. A mineral finish adds freshness and length. It is approachable in its youth, but its concentration and acidity should allow it to develop added honeyed and nutty complexity over the next few years.
Production
The Langbult vineyard benefits from the warm, dry conditions of Stellenbosch, where old vines produce naturally concentrated fruit while retaining freshness. The grapes are harvested at optimum ripeness to balance flavour and acidity, then carefully vinified to preserve the variety’s aromatic character and textured palate. The use of old-vine Chenin Blanc contributes depth, complexity and a refined concentration to the finished wine.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. Its combination of fruit richness and freshness makes it a versatile partner for roast chicken, grilled or pan-fried fish, creamy seafood dishes, pork, mild curries and mature cheeses. Decanting is not essential, although a short period of aeration in the glass—or 20–30 minutes in a decanter—can help reveal its fuller aromatic profile.
Producer
Simonsig is one of Stellenbosch’s best-known wine estates, founded in 1968 by Frans Malan and closely associated with the development of South African quality wine. The estate has played a particularly important role in the country’s Méthode Cap Classique tradition, producing South Africa’s first commercially released bottle-fermented sparkling wine in 1971. Today, Simonsig combines this pioneering heritage with a strong focus on expressive Stellenbosch wines, including distinctive old-vine Chenin Blanc.
