Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Barbera shows a deep ruby-red colour with bright purple reflections at the rim, hinting at its youthful intensity. The nose opens with generous aromas of ripe black cherries, red plums and crushed raspberries, followed by notes of violets, sweet spices and a whisper of licorice and dried herbs. On the palate, Le Coste is medium to full-bodied, juicy and mouth-filling, with Barbera’s hallmark lively acidity giving precision and lift. Flavours of dark cherry, blackberry and redcurrant are layered with subtle oak spice, cocoa and a savoury, almost earthy mineral tone. The tannins are fine and polished, offering structure without heaviness, and the finish is long, fresh and pleasantly mouthwatering. The Le Coste Barbera del Monferrato Superiore Bio is sourced from organically cultivated vineyards in the rolling hills of Monferrato, Piemonte, where clay-limestone soils and well-exposed slopes provide both ripeness and natural freshness. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal maturity, allowing careful selection of only the healthiest clusters. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve Barbera’s vivid fruit, followed by an extended maceration to extract colour and fine tannins. The wine is then aged – often in a combination of tank and large or seasoned oak – to harmonise the components and add gentle complexity, before bottling with minimal intervention to respect the character of the fruit and the organic philosophy.

This Barbera del Monferrato Superiore is a versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with rich pasta dishes (ragù, lasagne, agnolotti del plin), grilled or roasted meats, hearty stews, pizza with cured meats, and aged or semi-hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino. It also works well with mushroom-based dishes and rustic Piedmontese cuisine. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight both its fruit and structure. A short decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended for the 2021 vintage to let the wine open up and show its full aromatic spectrum.
