Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select 2016 Magnum is one of Napa Valley’s most celebrated Cabernet Sauvignon bottlings, drawn from a patchwork of steep hillside parcels around the estate. Known as the wine that put Shafer on the map, it has long been regarded as a benchmark for powerful, age-worthy Napa Cabernet and earned a perfect 100-point score for the 2016 vintage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deeply concentrated, opaque dark profile that hints at its intensity before the first sip. The nose is layered and expressive, with aromas of dark plums, blackcurrant tart, cassis, anise, nutmeg, and subtle rose petals. The palate follows with remarkable depth and precision, echoing dark plum and blueberry alongside pomegranate, licorice, crushed stones, tobacco, sage, and a touch of smoke. Rich yet composed, it delivers a long, persistent finish and has the structure to evolve beautifully over at least the next 20 years.

Production
Hillside Select is made entirely from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from 14 small vineyard blocks on Shafer’s hillside estate in Napa Valley, where the slopes help produce naturally concentrated fruit with strong character and balance. The 2016 vintage was vinified by winemaker Elias Fernandez and spent 32 months aging in 100% new French oak barrels, adding polish, complexity, and a refined structural frame to the wine’s powerful core.

Food & Serving
Best enjoyed with richly flavored dishes such as prime rib, dry-aged steak, lamb chops, venison, or braised short ribs. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for several hours if drinking young to allow the wine’s full ароматics and texture to open up.
