Description

Sept’s Cabernet Sauvignon de Nehla 2022 is a rare, small-parcel expression from terraced vineyards high in the Batroun mountains of northern Lebanon, overlooking the Mediterranean. Farmed biodynamically and crafted with a light touch, it captures both the power of Cabernet Sauvignon and the wild, aromatic character of its coastal-mountain home. This is a deeply expressive Lebanese red that showcases the emerging reputation of Lebanon’s high-altitude terroirs for elegant yet structured wines.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Sept Cabernet Sauvignon de Nehla 2022 shows a deep, vibrant ruby to garnet hue with a youthful, inky core. The nose is intense and inviting, layered with dark cassis and ripe black plum, lifted by notes of Mediterranean wild herbs, violet, and subtle spice. On the palate, the wine is full of depth and concentration, with juicy black fruit at its center—cassis, plum, and a touch of blackberry—wrapped in fine, ripe tannins. Floral and spicy nuances weave through the mid-palate, while a bright, energetic acidity provides a refreshing counterpoint to the wine’s natural power. The finish is long, savory, and aromatic, suggesting hints of dried herbs and subtle earth. Drinking beautifully now with a short aeration, it has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 8–12 years, gaining complexity and softness over time.

Production
The grapes for this wine come from just a few small rows in Sept’s home vineyard in the village of Nehla, set on terraced slopes in the Batroun mountains overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The altitude and cooling sea breezes temper Lebanon’s warm climate, allowing for slow, even ripening and excellent natural acidity. Maher, Sept’s founder and vigneron, farms the site biodynamically, focusing on living soils, low yields, and hands-on care to encourage concentrated, characterful fruit. Harvest is carried out by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict selection of bunches in the vineyard. In the cellar, the philosophy is minimal intervention: gentle extraction, native yeast fermentation, and careful élevage to preserve purity of fruit and a clear expression of place, rather than heavy oak influence or manipulation.

Food & Serving
This Cabernet pairs beautifully with grilled or roast lamb, herb-crusted beef, game dishes, and slow-braised meats, as well as rich vegetable casseroles featuring eggplant, mushrooms, and pulses. Mediterranean-inspired plates with rosemary, thyme, and oregano will echo the wine’s wild herbal notes, while aged hard cheeses and semi-hard goat or sheep’s cheeses also make a fine match. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal balance and aromatic expression. Decant for 45–60 minutes in its youth to allow the floral and spicy layers to unfurl; with additional bottle age, a brief 20–30 minute decant will suffice to open up the wine.

Producer
Sept is a pioneering Lebanese producer that has quickly gained a cult following for its terroir-driven, organically and biodynamically farmed wines. Founded by Maher Harb, Sept is built around the idea that each vineyard and each parcel should be allowed to speak for itself, resulting in wines that are honest, transparent expressions of place. Working across select high-altitude sites in Lebanon, the estate has helped shine a spotlight on the country’s potential for fresh, finely structured wines that stand apart from more conventional, heavily oaked styles. Sept’s commitment to low-intervention winemaking and regenerative farming practices has made it a reference point for modern Lebanese wine, earning recognition from sommeliers and wine lovers seeking authenticity and a strong sense of origin.
