Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2009 Anghelu Ruju shows a deep garnet hue with brick-red highlights at the rim, hinting at its age and extended barrel maturation. Swirl the glass and you’ll find layered aromas of dried figs, dates, macerated cherries and plum compote, intertwined with notes of roasted nuts, sweet spices, myrtle, Mediterranean scrub and a gentle touch of vanilla and cocoa from the wood. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, sweet dessert wine, but never cloying. Cannonau’s natural structure brings a firm backbone of tannin and a subtle grip that balances the richness of the residual sugar and elevated alcohol. Flavors of dried fruit, caramelized orange peel, toffee, licorice and toasted almonds unfold slowly, framed by hints of tobacco and leather. Production
The fruit for Anghelu Ruju comes from Sella & Mosca’s estate vineyards near Alghero, in northwestern Sardinia, where sea breezes, abundant sunshine and well-drained, often sandy and calcareous soils concentrate flavor and preserve freshness in Cannonau. Grapes are harvested very ripe—often slightly overripe—to intensify sugars and aromatics, then carefully selected. For this liquoroso style, fermentation is intentionally interrupted by the addition of neutral grape spirit, preserving natural sweetness while elevating the alcohol. The wine then undergoes extended aging in oak casks and barrels, often for many years, allowing slow oxidation and integration of flavors that give the Riserva its distinctive nutty, dried-fruit complexity and remarkable depth.

Food & Serving
This 2009 Anghelu Ruju is made for contemplative after-dinner moments and pairs beautifully with blue cheeses, aged pecorino, nut-based desserts, dark chocolate tarts and flourless chocolate cakes. It also shines alongside almond biscotti, fig tarts and dishes featuring dried fruits or caramel. Serve slightly cool, around 14–16°C (57–61°F), to highlight its aromatics without emphasizing the alcohol. Decanting for 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up, especially if the bottle has been cellared for some time, but a gentle pour into large dessert wine glasses is often all it needs.
