Description
Sekthaus Raumland Pinot Noir Grande Réserve Brut 2012 is a masterfully crafted German sparkling wine that showcases just how serious Rheinhessen Sekt can be. Made exclusively from Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) and vinified as a white sparkling wine, it delivers depth, finesse, and a remarkably precise structure. Awarded 2nd place in the VINUM Deutscher Sekt Award 2025 in the prestigious “Burgunder-Sekte Supreme” category with 96 points, it stands among Germany’s finest sparkling wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2012 Grande Réserve shows a luminous pale gold hue with delicate, persistent bubbles that form a fine, elegant mousse. The nose is refined and complex, unfolding layers of fresh brioche, warm pastry, and subtle marzipan, supported by notes of toasted nuts, baked apple, and a hint of citrus zest.
On the palate, the wine is silky and precise, with a very fine, creamy mousse that integrates seamlessly into the texture. A beautifully judged, vibrant acidity lends juiciness and lift, carrying flavors of brioche, almond, ripe stone fruit, and pastry-like sweetness (without actual residual sugar). As it opens, the bouquet-like aromatics from the nose return on the finish, adding floral and nutty nuances. Thanks to its long lees aging and high-quality base wine, this 2012 vintage has excellent aging potential: it is drinking beautifully now but will continue to develop more nutty, toasty, and honeyed complexity over the next 5–8 years, provided it is well cellared.
Production
The grapes for this Pinot Noir Grande Réserve Brut come from carefully selected Rheinhessen vineyards, where the cool, continental climate and diverse, limestone-influenced soils help preserve freshness and structure in the fruit. The Pinot Noir is harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict sorting to ensure only healthy, perfectly ripe bunches are used. To produce a white sparkling wine from red grapes (blanc de noirs), whole clusters are gently pressed to limit color extraction. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel and, in part, in neutral vessels to build texture, followed by a long period of traditional bottle fermentation on the lees, which is key to the wine’s fine mousse and complex brioche and pastry notes. After extended aging, the wine is disgorged and finished with a carefully balanced dosage to maintain its dry, precise Brut style.
Food & Serving
This elegant Sekt is a versatile partner at the table. It pairs beautifully with refined appetizers such as oysters, scallops, sushi, and sashimi, as well as delicate fish dishes, poultry in light cream sauces, or veal with mushrooms. Its brioche and marzipan nuances also make it a wonderful match for lobster, truffled dishes, or mildly aged cheeses like Comté and Gruyère. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) in a tulip-shaped sparkling wine glass or a white wine glass to allow the aromas to fully express. Decanting is not necessary, but opening the bottle a few minutes before serving and letting the wine rest in the glass will help it reveal its full aromatic complexity.
Producer
Sekthaus Raumland, based in Flörsheim-Dalsheim in Rheinhessen, is widely regarded as one of Germany’s benchmark producers for traditional-method sparkling wine. Founded by Volker Raumland, the estate was a pioneer in treating Sekt with the same seriousness and rigor as top Champagne, focusing exclusively on high-quality bottle-fermented sparkling wines. Through meticulous vineyard work, hand-harvesting, gentle pressing, and exceptionally long lees aging, Raumland has played a key role in elevating the reputation of German Sekt both domestically and abroad. Consistently high ratings and top placements in competitions such as the VINUM Deutscher Sekt Award underline the estate’s significance as a leading specialist in Burgunder-based (Pinot family) sparkling wines in Germany.
