Description
Seckinger Riesling Gottsacker Bio 2020 is a characterful, naturally made Riesling from the Pfalz that captures both the cool freshness and sun‑ripened power of the Deidesheimer Herrgottsacker vineyard. Bottled as Landwein due to its uncompromising, low‑intervention vinification, it offers an authentic, unpolished expression of place. This is a serious, terroir‑driven white for drinkers who appreciate energy, texture and a touch of wildness in their glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Gottsacker Riesling presents a pale to medium lemon colour, often with a faint haze due to the unfiltered, natural style. On the nose, it opens with vibrant aromas of ripe citrus (lemon zest, tangerine), green and yellow apple, and stone fruits, layered with notes of crushed slate, wild herbs, and a subtle, yeasty nuance from the long, slow spontaneous fermentation.
On the palate, the wine is bone‑dry, taut and energetic, with a lively acidity that reflects the cooler, forest‑adjacent parcels, balanced by the depth and ripeness derived from the warmer core of the Herrgottsacker. Expect flavours of lime, grapefruit, underripe peach and green pear, supported by a firm mineral backbone and a faint phenolic grip from skin contact that adds structure and length. The finish is long, saline and slightly smoky, with a savoury edge that makes it extremely food‑friendly. While already approachable, this Riesling has the structure and natural concentration to evolve positively for 5–8 years from the vintage, gaining complexity, spice and honeyed notes with time in bottle.
Production
The Riesling Gottsacker Bio 2020 is sourced from the Deidesheimer Herrgottsacker, the largest single vineyard in the commune, known for its varied soils and exposures. Here, cooler parcels near the forest contribute tension, freshness and acidity, while the warmer core plots deliver ripeness, weight and power. Farming is certified organic, with a strong focus on biodiversity and minimal intervention in the vineyard. Half of the grapes from the warmer sections are gently pressed as whole clusters, preserving purity and fine aromatics; the other half, from the cooler parcels, sees a period of maceration on the skins to enhance structure and extract. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts and proceeds very slowly, reflecting the natural cellar regime. The wine is vinified and matured without fining or filtration, and no sulphur is used except a small protective dose at bottling, resulting in a vivid, textural Riesling bottled as Landwein rather than under the official single‑vineyard designation.
Food & Serving
This expressive, structured Riesling is a versatile partner at the table. It pairs beautifully with fresh and saltwater fish (trout, cod, ceviche), shellfish, sushi and sashimi, as well as lighter poultry dishes, veal schnitzel, and vegetable‑driven cuisine such as asparagus, artichoke, grilled zucchini and herb‑rich salads. Its acidity and subtle phenolic grip also make it excellent with mildly spicy Asian dishes, tartares, and soft goat or young cow’s milk cheeses. Serve well‑chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11 °C, to let the aromatics unfold. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up and soften the initial reductive or yeasty notes typical of naturally vinified Riesling.
