Description

Seckinger Riesling Deidesheim Kieselberg Wurzelecht Bio is a rare glimpse into how Riesling tasted before modern viticulture changed Europe’s vineyards forever. Sourced from ungrafted, organically farmed vines in the famed Kieselberg site, this wine offers an unusually pure and unfiltered expression of Pfalz terroir. It’s a characterful, minimalist Riesling that speaks more of place and soil than of winemaking technique.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling shows a bright, pale straw color with subtle green reflections, signaling freshness and youthful energy. The nose is precise and stony, with aromas of lime zest, green apple, white peach and grapefruit peel layered over wet river stones, crushed herbs and a delicate floral lift. There’s a subtle wildness and tension that hints at its ungrafted origins. On the palate, the wine is lean, vibrant and tightly wound, with a clear, linear acid backbone that carries citrus and stone-fruit flavors effortlessly across the tongue. Notes of lemon pith, tart peach, green pear and saline minerality unfold with air, joined by a faint smokiness and herbal nuance. The finish is long, dry and almost crystalline, leaving a mouthwatering, salty impression that invites another sip. This Riesling has excellent aging potential; over the next 5–10 years it should gain in complexity, bringing out more brioche, honey and petrol tones while retaining its mineral core.

Production
The Kieselberg vineyard above Deidesheim is known for its well-drained, stony soils—rich in gravel and sand with mineral-laden subsoils—that naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. Here, Seckinger works with wurzelecht (ungrafted) Riesling vines, a true rarity in Europe since phylloxera, farming them organically and with great care to preserve vine health and soil life. Harvest is done by hand, allowing strict selection of perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. In the cellar, the brothers at Weingut Seckinger follow a low-intervention philosophy: gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and extended time on the lees, often in neutral vessels, help the wine express its site without heavy-handed winemaking. Minimal additions and restrained use of sulfur keep the profile pure, textural and transparently mineral.

Food & Serving
This focused, mineral Riesling pairs beautifully with delicate but flavorful dishes such as ceviche, oysters, sashimi, sushi, steamed mussels or lightly grilled fish with citrus and herbs. It’s equally at home alongside Asian-inspired cuisine—think Vietnamese summer rolls, Thai salads with lime and coriander, or lightly spiced dishes with ginger and lemongrass—as well as classic German fare like smoked trout, white asparagus or fresh goats’ cheese. Serve well chilled, ideally around 8–10°C. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply giving it time in the glass, helps the wine open up aromatically and show more depth and complexity.

Producer
Weingut Seckinger is a young, dynamic estate in the Pfalz, run by the Seckinger brothers, who have quickly built a reputation as one of the region’s most exciting new-wave producers. From their base in the Mittelhaardt, they focus on organically farmed vineyards and a hands-off approach in the cellar to craft wines that are precise, energetic and deeply rooted in their origins. Their work in top sites around Deidesheim—especially with rare ungrafted vines—has helped highlight the unique character of Pfalz Riesling beyond the traditional, polished style. In a short time, Seckinger has become a reference name among fans of terroir-driven, minimal-intervention German wines, with growing recognition both at home and abroad.
