Description
A rare 1971 Riesling Beerenauslese from Hattenheimer Pfaffenberg in the Rheingau, Schloss Schönborn’s Versteigerung bottling is a remarkable example of Germany’s great sweet-wine tradition. Produced from individually selected, naturally concentrated grapes and matured for decades in bottle, it offers both historic significance and collectible appeal. With its limited availability, this 0.7-litre bottle is suited to special occasions or the cellar of a dedicated wine enthusiast.
Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to show a deep golden to amber colour, reflecting its age and concentration. Its mature bouquet combines ripe stone fruit and dried fruit with honeyed notes, subtle spice and the complex, savoury nuances that can develop during long bottle ageing.
On the palate, the wine is rich and sweet, yet balanced by the lively acidity characteristic of Riesling from the Rheingau. Flavours of preserved fruit, honey and spice lead to a lingering finish. As a mature 1971 bottling, it is ready to enjoy now; its precise condition and remaining drinking window will depend on storage history, fill level and bottle provenance.
Production
The wine comes from Hattenheimer Pfaffenberg, a recognised vineyard site in the Rheingau. Beerenauslese is made from individually hand-selected, overripe Riesling berries with naturally high sugar concentration, often including noble-rot-affected grapes where conditions allow. The resulting wine is crafted for richness, sweetness and longevity, and this Versteigerung bottling has gained additional character through its many decades of bottle maturation.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C to allow its mature aromas and balance to emerge. It is an excellent partner for foie gras, blue cheese, fruit-based desserts and richly flavoured pâté, while its sweetness and acidity also make it a compelling wine to savour on its own. Decanting is not usually necessary for an aged Beerenauslese, but opening it carefully shortly before serving can help remove any sediment; avoid prolonged aeration if the wine appears delicate.
Producer
Schloss Schönborn is a historic Rheingau estate associated with the production of fine Riesling and the region’s tradition of elegant, long-lived wines. Its Hattenheim vineyards and auction releases reflect the importance placed on site, vintage and selection in the Rheingau. The 1971 Versteigerung bottling stands as a particularly rare expression of this heritage and a fascinating snapshot of German sweet-wine making from a celebrated vintage era.
