Description
A rare, mature Rheingau Riesling Beerenauslese from the exceptional 1971 vintage, this 0.7-litre bottling was carefully cellared at Schloss Reinhartshausen before being released from the estate’s treasury in 2018. With more than five decades of bottle age, it offers a remarkable opportunity to experience the richness, concentration and longevity of traditionally made German sweet Riesling.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its long maturation. Its aromatic profile is intensely expressive, with ripe peach, apricot and mango layered with notes of honey, sweet spice and the complex, developed nuances that emerge with age. On the palate, it is rich and luscious, balancing its natural sweetness with Riesling’s refreshing acidity. The finish is long and concentrated, returning to ripe fruit and honeyed flavours. Properly stored, this mature Beerenauslese may continue to evolve for years, although it is already at an impressive stage of development.
Production
Harvested in 1971 from the Hattenheimer Wisselbrunnen vineyard in the Rheingau, the wine was produced as a Beerenauslese—a style made from individually selected, exceptionally ripe Riesling grapes. The fruit’s concentration gives the wine its sumptuous sweetness and intensity, while the Rheingau’s cool climate helps preserve the acidity essential for balance and long ageing. After extensive maturation at Schloss Reinhartshausen, the bottle was released from the estate’s cellars in 2018.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. This elegant sweet Riesling is a natural match for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie and blue or mature cheeses; it can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative aperitif or after-dinner wine. Decanting is not usually necessary, but carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and pouring gently can help preserve the wine’s clarity and delicate mature aromas.
Producer
Schloss Reinhartshausen is a historic estate in Germany’s Rheingau, one of the country’s most distinguished regions for Riesling. The estate is associated with finely crafted wines from prestigious vineyard sites, including Hattenheim’s Wisselbrunnen. This 1971 Beerenauslese, preserved in the winery’s cellars until its 2018 release, represents both the region’s exceptional ageing potential and the enduring value of properly stored mature German wine.
