Description

A remarkable piece of Rheingau wine history, the Schloss Reinhartshausen Erbacher Rheinhell Riesling Auslese Cabinet 1921 was produced from the exceptional 1921 vintage and kept in the estate’s cellars for approximately 97 years before being released as “ex Chateau 2018.” A rare, mature sweet Riesling of considerable interest to collectors, it offers an opportunity to experience a wine shaped by nearly a century of careful cellaring.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its extraordinary age and long maturation. Its bouquet is intensely layered, with notes of ripe peach, apricot and honey complemented by a subtle mineral character. On the palate, it is full-bodied and sweet, balanced by refreshing acidity that prevents the richness from becoming heavy. The finish is long, elegant and gently mineral. As a wine from 1921, it should be approached as a mature collectible and is best enjoyed now rather than cellared primarily for further development; its condition may vary depending on storage and bottle provenance.

Production
Produced in the Erbacher Rheinhell vineyard in Germany’s Rheingau, this Riesling Auslese was made from hand-selected grapes and matured for approximately 97 years in the cellars of Schloss Reinhartshausen before being released in 2018. Specific details regarding the harvest date, vinification and bottling are not provided, but the extended estate cellaring is central to the wine’s rarity and character.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s mature aromas and sweetness to unfold in the glass. Its richness and balancing acidity make it a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, apricot or peach tarts, crème brûlée and blue cheese; it can also be enjoyed as a contemplative aperitif. Decanting is not essential, but carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and gently pouring can help separate any sediment. Given its age, handle the cork and bottle with particular care.

Producer
Schloss Reinhartshausen is a historic estate in the Rheingau, one of Germany’s most renowned regions for Riesling. The estate’s long tradition of producing and cellaring distinguished wines is reflected in this exceptionally rare 1921 bottling, released from its own cellars in 2018. With its historic vintage, provenance and extended maturation, the wine is especially suited to collectors and enthusiasts of mature German Riesling.
