Description

Bottled in an impressive magnum format, Schloss Gobelsburg Zöbing Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW 2019 is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of Austria’s most revered single vineyards. This is a statuesque, ageworthy white that marries depth and power with striking precision and mineral finesse. The 1ÖTW designation highlights its status as a top Erste Lage (premier cru) site, reflecting both pedigree and meticulous craftsmanship.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Heiligenstein shows an intense, shimmering golden hue that hints at concentration and maturity of fruit. The nose is deeply refined and quietly complex, opening with perfectly ripe stone fruits—apricot, white peach and mirabelle—interlaced with crystalline mineral notes, hints of warm sandstone, fine white tea and a delicate white pepper lift. There’s an aristocratic restraint here: nothing is loud, yet everything feels finely etched and precise. On the palate, the wine is crystalline, tightly woven and effortlessly elegant. A core of ripe stone fruit and citrus zest rides on a spine of vibrant acidity and salty, stony minerality that is so typical of Heiligenstein’s unique sandstone and volcanic conglomerate soils. The texture is both round and focused, delivering density without heaviness, with a firm, finely structured backbone carrying through to a very long, persistent finish. This is still at the beginning of its evolution; while already captivating, it will gain further complexity, spice and tertiary nuance over 10–20 years in a good cellar, especially in magnum.

Production
Ried Heiligenstein is one of Kamptal’s most legendary Riesling vineyards, a steep, terraced site with weathered sandstone and conglomerate soils mixed with volcanic elements that imbue the wines with their signature crystalline, spicy-mineral character. Schloss Gobelsburg works sustainably, harvesting by hand in multiple passes to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are selected. After gentle pressing, the must is allowed to settle before a carefully controlled, largely spontaneous fermentation, typically in stainless steel and/or large neutral casks to preserve purity. The wine then rests on its fine lees, gaining texture and nuance without overt oak influence, before being bottled to capture the vineyard’s precision and transparency.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile gastronomic white that shines with refined dishes: think poached or grilled turbot, Dover sole, scallops, sashimi-grade tuna, or fine freshwater fish. It is superb with classic Austrian cuisine such as Wiener schnitzel, but also with aromatic dishes like Thai or Vietnamese seafood, where its structure and minerality cut through richness and spice. Aged cheeses such as Comté or aged Gruyère are also excellent partners. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F); in magnum, the wine benefits from a brief decant of 30–60 minutes in its youth to allow the aromatics to unfurl, though older bottles should be handled more gently and decanted only to remove sediment.

Producer
Schloss Gobelsburg is one of Austria’s oldest and most respected wine estates, with documented winemaking history dating back to 1171 under Cistercian monks. Located in the Kamptal, the estate has been a driving force in expressing the region’s distinctive terroirs, particularly for Riesling and Grüner Veltliner from sites like Heiligenstein and Gaisberg. Under the stewardship of Michael Moosbrugger, Schloss Gobelsburg has gained international acclaim for its combination of traditional methods and meticulous vineyard work, earning a reputation as a benchmark producer in Austria and a reference point for elegant, ageworthy, terroir-driven whites.
