Description
Schäfer-Fröhlich Vulkangestein 2022 is a razor-sharp, mineral-driven Riesling from some of Nahe’s most dramatic volcanic sites. Sourced from younger vines in two Grand Cru-level vineyards, it delivers top-tier character at a more approachable price point. The cuvée takes its name, “Vulkangestein” (volcanic rock), from the fiery soils that have shaped the estate’s reputation as one of Germany’s leaders in precise, dry Riesling.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Vulkangestein 2022 shows a pale, luminous straw-yellow with green highlights that hint at its freshness and youth. The nose initially reveals a subtle, slightly yeasty note from its élevage, which quickly gives way to a crystal-clear fruit profile: citrus zest, green apple and white peach, with a refined tropical nuance of pineapple hovering in the background. Underneath runs a firm, stony minerality, like wet rock and flint, lifted by hints of white pepper and a whisper of nutmeg.
On the palate, this is bone dry, sleek and linear, with a cool, tense, almost electric character. A core of lemon and lime is wrapped in saline, stony notes and a very fine, almost prickling acidity that drives the wine from attack to finish. The texture is slender yet concentrated, with a long, spicy and mouthwatering aftertaste. Enjoyable now with air, it will easily evolve over the next 5–8 years, gaining complexity, softer edges and more pronounced mineral depth while retaining its vibrant precision.
Production
Vulkangestein 2022 is sourced from 20–30-year-old Riesling vines planted on steep, rocky slopes in Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg and Bockenauer Stromberg, two of the Nahe’s most revered volcanic sites. The poor, stony soils of porphyry and volcanic rock naturally limit yields and imbue the wine with its signature saltiness and tension. Grapes are typically hand-harvested in small crates to ensure pristine fruit, often picked in multiple passes for optimal ripeness and selection. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented with carefully managed, often spontaneous fermentations in stainless steel and/or traditional large oak, allowing for a slow, cool vinification that preserves aromatic purity and minerality. A period of maturation on the fine lees adds texture and complexity without diminishing the wine’s remarkable clarity and cut.
Food & Serving
This focused, dry Riesling is a natural partner for refined, mineral-accented dishes. Think oysters, raw and marinated seafood, sushi and sashimi, ceviche, grilled prawns, or delicate white fish with citrus and herbs. It also shines with goat’s cheese, fresh cheeses, light poultry dishes, and vegetable-based cuisine such as asparagus, fennel, or lightly spiced Asian fare. Serve well chilled at about 8–10°C (46–50°F). A brief decant of 15–30 minutes, or simply letting it open in the glass, helps the initial yeasty notes integrate and allows the fruit and spice to fully emerge.
Producer
Schäfer-Fröhlich is one of the benchmark estates of the Nahe and a standard-setter for finely etched, profoundly mineral Riesling in Germany. Based in Bockenau, the family has been growing grapes for generations, but it is under the stewardship of Tim Fröhlich that the winery has risen to international prominence. With holdings in some of the region’s greatest vineyards—such as Felsenberg, Stromberg and Felseneck—the estate is renowned for its meticulous viticulture on steep, rocky slopes and its uncompromising pursuit of precision and terroir expression. Regularly praised by leading critics and awarded top scores for its Grosses Gewächs bottlings, Schäfer-Fröhlich has become synonymous with cutting-edge, dry German Riesling of remarkable intensity and finesse.
