Description

Schäfer-Fröhlich Vulkangestein 2021 is a crystalline, dry Riesling from some of the Nahe’s most distinctive volcanic soils. Named “Vulkangestein” (volcanic rock), it’s a wine that captures both the ripeness of the 2021 vintage and the cool, stony precision this estate is famed for. Expect a Riesling that is at once generous and refined, with a clear emphasis on minerality and clarity of fruit.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Vulkangestein 2021 shows a pale lemon color with green reflections, signaling both youth and freshness. The nose is immediately expressive and flinty, with a lifted bouquet of ripe white and yellow stone fruits: white and yellow-fleshed peaches, apricots, and mirabelles, intertwined with smoky, crushed-rock notes and a cool, saline edge. On the palate, the wine is round and juicy yet beautifully focused, balancing ripe stone-fruit generosity with a vibrant, zesty line of acidity. The texture is sleek and precise, with that characteristic volcanic “spark” running through the mid-palate and into the long, mouthwatering finish. It remains cool, elegant, and finely etched, never heavy, with perfectly judged dryness and only 12% alcohol. Enjoyable now for its vibrant fruit and tension, it has the structure and minerality to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining complexity and a more pronounced smoky, herbal nuance.

Production
Vulkangestein is sourced from steep, stony sites in the Nahe planted on volcanic bedrock, which lends the wine its distinctive flinty, smoky minerality and linear profile. Schäfer-Fröhlich farms these vineyards meticulously, with low yields and careful hand selection at harvest to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy Riesling grapes are used. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented slowly—often with ambient yeasts—in stainless steel and large old casks, preserving purity of fruit and terroir expression. The wine is then matured on its fine lees to build texture and complexity while retaining the crystalline freshness that defines the estate’s style.

Food & Serving
This dry, mineral-driven Riesling pairs beautifully with a wide range of dishes, especially those that highlight freshness and subtle spice. Consider serving it alongside seafood such as oysters, grilled prawns, or ceviche; light, citrus-accented fish dishes; or delicately spiced Asian cuisine, including sashimi, sushi, or Thai dishes with lime and ginger. It also complements white asparagus, goat cheese, and vegetable-driven starters. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C. Decanting is not essential, but pouring the wine into a larger glass and giving it a few minutes in the glass will help the flinty, stone-fruit aromas fully open.
